Book Description
Excerpt from Census of Newfoundland and Labrador, 1901, Vol. 1: Table I Population, Sex, Condition, Denominations, Professions, &C I have the honour to submit the following Report upon the Census of 1901. It is provided in Cap. 27, Consolidated Statutes (2nd Series), that the general census and returns shall be taken and made between the months of June and December in the year 1901. As in this Colony the Educational and Road Grants are allocated to each section according to its population, it is obvious that the enumeration must not only be of the people as a whole, but also of the residents in each settlement A large number of these people can only be found at their homes during the xfihtéréeason a time when it is impossible to take the census, owing to the difficulties of communication and travel. The sum mer finds them at Labrador, or engaged in the fisheries off the coast of this Island, but the enumerator must count them as resident in the settlement where is their place of abode. Special provision had to be made in order to avoid duplication of entry, and in most cases the sheets were retained till December, when the majority of these people had re turned home, and the sheets could thus be checked. The census, there fore, may be regarded as including all persons resident in Newfoundland and Labrador in the month of December, 1901.
