Chinatowns around the World
Author: Bernard P. Wong
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004255907
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 318
Book Description
The phenomenon of “Chinatown” has been of great interest to the general public as well as scholars. Movies and story books have made Chinatown to be exotic, mysterious, gangster filled, and sometimes, a gilded ghetto, an ethnopolis, a cultural diaspora as well as a model community. The authors of Chinatowns around the World seek to expose the social reality of Chinatowns with empirical data. The authors also examine the changing nature and functions of Chinatowns around the world while scrutinizing how factors emanating from larger societies and other external factors have shaped Chinatown development and transformation. The activities of the recent Chinese transnational migrants are also critically appraised.

Regions, Land Consumption and Sustainable Growth
Author: O. A. L. C. Atzema
Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing
ISBN: 9781781959046
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 240
Book Description
This book provides an in-depth investigation of the role of the private and public sectors in land markets and regional economics, and explores the reasons behind government intervention in the interests of sustainable growth. The authors explore the subject of regional development and changing land use in a variety of different countries. They examine broad themes such as urban structure, infrastructure and eco-structure, and look in detail at issues including housing, transport and technology clustering. They also demonstrate that for a proper understanding of long-term changes, the broader institutional settings and policy regimes are of critical importance, as it is within this framework that private and public actors interact. It is therefore vital to search for institutional arrangements where conflicts of interest can be dealt with in a constructive way, and where ecological values are taken into consideration. The contributions in this book highlight these difficulties and offer practical proposals to improve current practices. Regional scientists, geographers and development policymakers will welcome this rigorous exploration of the roles of the private and public sectors in the context of economic development.

Belly Dance Around the World
Author: Caitlin E. McDonald
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 0786473703
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 225
Book Description
In these essays, dancers and scholars from around the world carefully consider the transformation of an improvised folk form from North Africa and the Middle East into a popular global dance practice. They explore the differences between the solo improvisational forms of North Africa and the Middle East, often referred to as raqs sharki, which are part of family celebrations, and the numerous globalized versions of this dance form, belly dance, derived from the movement vocabulary of North Africa and the Middle East but with a variety of performance styles distinct from its site of origin. Local versions of belly dance have grown and changed along with the role that dance plays in the community. The global evolution of belly dance is an inspiring example of the interplay of imagination, the internet and the social forces of local communities. All royalties are being donated to Women for Women International, an organization dedicated to supporting women survivors of war through economic, health, and social education programs. The contributors are proud to provide continuing sponsorship to such a worthwhile and necessary cause.

Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1442692847
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 313
Book Description
Even though the Portuguese are relatively new to Canada, they have made major contributions to the cultural mosaic of the country. The contributors come from a variety of disciplines - anthropology, geography, history, literature, linguistics, sociology, and urban planning - and are from Portugal, Canada and the United States. Essays examine the history of the Portuguese diaspora, the Portuguese presence in Newfoundland and its fisheries, language and identity, urban experiences (especially in Montreal and Toronto), and history and literature. This second edition of The Portuguese in Canada conveys the multi-faceted contributions the Portuguese have made to Canada and considers possible future growth and development of Portuguese-Canadian culture and heritage.
