Book Description
This book presents the current state of knowledge on the origin and differentiation of cell lines involved in the development of the vertebrate male and female gonads with particular emphasis on the mouse. It also discusses the processes leading to the testis- and ovary-specific structures and functions. The individual chapters review the origin and differentiation of the somatic cells of the genital ridges; the formation and migration of primordial germ cells in mouse and man; the gonadal supporting cell lineage and mammalian sex determination; differentiation of Sertoli and granulosa cells; mesonephric cell migration into the gonads and vascularization; origin and differentiation of androgen-producing cells in the gonads; germ cell commitment to the oogenic versus spermatogenic pathway and the role of retinoic acid; ovarian folliculogenesis; control of oocyte growth and development by intercellular communication within the follicular niche; biology of the Sertoli cell in the fetal, pubertal and adult mammalian testis; mechanisms regulating spermatogonial differentiation; stem cells in mammalian gonads; the role of microRNAs in cell differentiation during gonad development; human sex development and its disorders; as well as methods for the study of gonadal development.

Book Description
In recent years a new field of study has arisen called developmental biology. The term developmental biology is really a new name for embryology; it is, however, used to denote the molecular approach to the study of developing systems. In this book we have tried wherever possible to blend the older information of classical embryology and in particular organogeny with the newer concepts of developmental biology. The original intention was to cover all the tissues of the body in this book. However, it soon became obvious that it was not possible to do this within one volume. Therefore we decided to have two general chapters, one on the basic concepts of cellular development and an other on the ageing of cells (this being considered part of the normal growth process). In addition to these two general chapters we have included chapters on some of the major tissues. These were chosen not just to illustrate the points made in the general chapters but because there is enough information available on the development of these tissues for the expert in that field to present a good, readable account. It is hoped that at a later date when more information is available, we will be able to extend this work, probably as several volumes, and to include the other tissues of the body which are not dealt with in this volume.

Book Description
Past, present and future of research on testis and ovary development Sex determination, the mechanism by which embryos are committed to develop as either males or females, has been the subject of intense research during the last two decades. Gonadal development, which is a crucial event of sex differentiation, involves complex cellular processes, including the differentiation of several cell types, cell proliferation and migration as well as vascularization, which take place differently in male and female embryos. This special issue of Sexual Development presents a series of 12 articles describing the state of the art of the control of gonad development in mammals and other vertebrates. Several of the most renowned international experts in the field of sexual development review the genetic, hormonal and environmental operators controlling gonad development in mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and nematodes, as well as the cases of sex reversal and gonad abnormalities derived from mutations in the human and other mammals. Providing both basic and advanced insights into the control of gonad development in a variety of animal taxa, this issue is essential reading for both students and researchers in the fields of genetics, developmental and reproductive biology, zoology and evolutionary biology.

Book Description
Recent progress in cell and molecular biology has profound implications for understanding the developmental biology of mammalian embryos. The unifying theme of this volume is a cellular and molecular approach to gametogenesis, embryogenesis, and maternal-fetal interactions in the developmental biology of agriculturally significant mammals. Great progress has been achieved in our understanding of preimplantation mammalian embryogenesis in laboratory species, particularly the mouse, through application of cell and embryo culture methods, cell biological techniques, and, more recently, recombinant DNA technology. A major remaining opportunity is the application of these techniques to problems in domestic species, such as improved methods for in vitro growth and maturation of oocytes, egg and embryo cryopreservation, and genetic manipulation to enhance productivity and herd quality. The authors review current knowledge in key areas, emphasizing new approaches to unsolved problems in the developmental biology of domestic species.

Book Description
The success of Assisted Reproductive Technology is critically dependent upon the use of well optimized protocols, based upon sound scientific reasoning, empirical observations and evidence of clinical efficacy. Recently, the treatment of infertility has experienced a revolution, with the routine adoption of increasingly specialized molecular biological techniques and advanced methods for the manipulation of gametes and embryos. This textbook – inspired by the postgraduate degree program at the University of Oxford – guides students through the multidisciplinary syllabus essential to ART laboratory practice, from basic culture techniques and micromanipulation to laboratory management and quality assurance, and from endocrinology to molecular biology and research methods. Written for all levels of IVF practitioners, reproductive biologists and technologists involved in human reproductive science, it can be used as a reference manual for all IVF labs and as a textbook by undergraduates, advanced students, scientists and professionals involved in gamete, embryo or stem cell biology.
