Nor were the Romans any better they who had in former times plundered and collected Art without ever having been able to produce it, seemed at this period also to have lost all interest in it, except where it ministered to the vanity and glory of their rulers. The Church, alone, seemed to employ Art for its own sake and in this way many traditional representations have been preserved. Two other nations deserve notice whilst considering the state of Art at this period, since, although called barbaric, and at no period remarkably elevated, they never sunk so low as the two celebrated races first mentioned, but they exercised a considerable in uence on the weakened state of Art in other countries.
