Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of Antiques and Bric-a-Brac: Consisting Largely of Etruscan Pottery and Statuary, Italian Majolica and Porcelain, With Examples of Old Ecclesiastic and Domestic Art in Various Forms IN the making and reading of books, the order of exercises is reversed, the last written being the first read; therefore I do not think those wise who speak disrespectfully of prefaces neither do I think those to be commended who publish books without a preface. To send your manuscript to the printer the instant you have finished the last page, has to me, an air of discourtesy to the reader, from whom, disguise it as you will, on secretly expect some favor. To him, indeed, your intro notion may be a matter of no great moment; but it concerns yourself that you be civil to your friends. Book Description
To anyone with an interest in antique pottery the name Etruscan Majolica is synonymous with quality yet few people know anything about the pottery or the company that made it. It is probably the most famous unknown pottery in the United States. This book will introduce you to Etruscan Majolica-a world where dolphins balance shells on their tails; swans swim serenely across pink, lily covered ponds; and begonia leaves come in every color of the rainbow. For "Etruscan Majolica: The Definitive Reference to the Majolica of Griffen, Smith & Company," the author spent six years traveling across the country in an effort to photograph examples of every known pattern made by the Etruscan Works of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Divided into categories based on subject this easy reference guide combines the history of the company, its founders and its catalog in a manner that will be of interest to dealers, novices and experienced collectors alike. Expanded edition includes more photos, easy to use index and updated price guide

Book Description
In 1984 the Getty Museum acquired an exceptional collection of Italian Renaissance maiolica, or tin-glazed earthenware. These often brilliantly colored objects range from an early Florentine jar with relief-blue decoration to a much later Mannerist dish with grotesque ornament. The collection was the subject of Italian Maiolica, a beautifully illustrated catalogue that the Museum published in 1988. Italian Ceramics amplifies and updates the earlier volume, including objects—some of them porcelain and terracotta—acquired during the intervening years. Among them are a pair of eighteenth-century candlesticks representing mythological scenes and a tabletop with hunting scenes; and, from the 1790s, the beautifully modeled and painted Saint Joseph with the Christ Child. Italian Ceramics contains the most recent scientific, historical, and iconographic information about the Museum’s holdings. Completely revised and expanded, this book offers a wealth of new information about the Getty Museum’s superb collection, which spans more than four centuries of Italian ceramic art.

Book Description
ÊWHAT we have attempted has been to gather and present, in a way to be easily understood, the most important facts respecting ÒPottery and Porcelain.Ó The study of this interesting subject has for more than a century been constant in Europe, and notably so during the last twenty-five years. A correct knowledge of it may now almost be called a liberal education. In the United States something has been done; and the public mind is now asking, ÒWhat is it that makes Ôpottery and porcelainÕ so attractive to scholars, statesmen, women, and wits?Ó In some degree we have answered this question. My part of the work has been to gather where I could such historical and technical facts and such illustrations as seemed most valuable, not only to the student but to the collector. Many of these came from Europe, of course, where since Queen AnneÕs day the love of Òold chinaÓ has at times risen to enthusiasm. But I have drawn from our own collections whenever it has been possible. In the preparation and engraving of the illustrations I hope the judicious critic, as well as the judicious public, will give due credit to the publishers and their artists, who, it seems to me, deserve great praise for having so well done what they have undertaken to do. Permit me to say a word forcollectors. Busy men who are making railways and coal-pits, under the pleasing illusion that they are developing the country more than the rest of us, are apt to think a man with any hobby except that of making money is wasting his time. I would like to remind the reader that there are a fewÑmany of them young men and young women tooÑwho have money enough for all reasonable wants, and who do not care to waste time and life in getting more money, for which they have no special uses; these persons find a perennial occupation in the study, the comparison, the purchasing, the collecting, of all that will illustrate their subject of studyÑtheir hobby. Around this subject of pottery and porcelain may be grouped, if one so pleases, all the habits, the wants, the inventions, the growths, of human society. Some have yet a notion that the study of the politics and the fightings of man is most important; others, how man came to be an Arminian or an Augustinian; others, whether the sun is or is not gradually cooling down, and must finally cease to be, or whether, on the contrary, its flames are fed by the self-sacrificing stars. Without detracting from their labors, I beg leave to say that my great hobby or central fact being the home, I hold that whatever makes that interesting, beautiful, or useful, is, or should be, interesting, beautiful, and useful, to all the world. I believe that what we call politics, or government, is only valuable in that it helps to create and to protect desirable homes; all the restÑall the speeches, and processions, and crownings, and court-balls, and receptions, and dinnersÑare Òleather and prunella.Ó
