Book Description
Excerpt from The Cape Catalogue of Stars, Deduced From Observations Made at the Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope, 1834 to 1840, and Reduced to the Epoch 1840 The Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope, was established by an Order in Council, dated 1820, October 20. The Observatory buildings were completed, the instruments, similar to those at that time in use at Greenwich, mounted, and observations commenced in 1829. The Rev. F. Fallows, the first director, died in July, 1831, and the observations made during his tenure of office will be found in the memoirs of the Royal Astronomical Society, Vol. Xix., which was published in 1851. The Catalogue contains the Right Ascensions of 425 Stars and the North Polar Distances of 88. Fallows was succeeded by Mr. Thos. Henderson, who however remained at the Cape but little more than a year, having resigned the appointment in 1833. The declinations of 172 Stars, made during his tenure of office, were published at Edinburgh in 1835; and the Right Ascensions of 174 Stars were given in vo]. Xv. Of the memoirs of the Royal Astronomical Society, which was published in 1844. Mr. Henderson was succeeded by Mr. (now Sir Thomas) Maclear, who arrived at the Cape on the sth of January, 1834. The present Catalogue contains the results of the Star-observing at the Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope, under the direction of Mr. (now Sir Thomas) Maclear, during the years 1834 to 1840, both inclusive.
