Book Description
Carmilla is a gothic novella by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, first published in 1872. It is often considered a seminal work in the vampire literature genre, predating Bram Stoker's Dracula by 25 years. The story revolves around a young woman named Laura and her encounter with a female vampire named Carmilla. The novella is narrated from Laura's perspective, who recounts her strange and eerie experiences with Carmilla. The two young women form a close bond, but Laura begins to experience disturbing dreams and declining health. It is eventually revealed that Carmilla is a vampire, and she is destroyed by a group of vampire hunters. Carmilla is notable for its exploration of lesbian themes, which were considered taboo at the time of its publication. The relationship between Laura and Carmilla is portrayed as intimate and sensual, although it is also fraught with danger and fear. The novella can be interpreted as a commentary on the societal attitudes towards same-sex desire in the Victorian era. The novella is also significant for its contribution to the vampire literature genre. Carmilla is depicted as a seductive and predatory figure, a trope that would become common in later vampire fiction. The novella also introduces the idea of a vampire hunter, a character type that would become a staple of the genre. Carmilla has been adapted into various forms of media, including film, television, and stage productions. It has also inspired a number of derivative works, including the web series Carmilla (2014-2016) and the novel The Gilda Stories (1991) by Jewelle Gomez. In terms of critical reception, Carmilla has been praised for its atmospheric writing and its exploration of taboo themes. However, it has also been criticized for its slow pacing and its lack of character development. Overall, Carmilla is a significant work in the gothic and vampire literature genres, and it continues to be studied and analyzed by scholars and fans alike.

Book Description
The first occurrence in my existence, which produced a terrible impression upon my mind, which, in fact, never has been effaced, was one of the very earliest incidents of my life which I can recollect. Some people will think it so trifling that it should not be recorded here. You will see, however, by-and-by, why I mention it. The nursery, as it was called, though I had it all to myself, was a large room in the upper story of the castle, with a steep oak roof. I can't have been more than six years old, when one night I awoke, and looking round the room from my bed, failed to see the nursery maid. Neither was my nurse there; and I thought myself alone. I was not frightened, for I was one of those happy children who are studiously kept in ignorance of ghost stories, of fairy tales, and of all such lore as makes us cover up our heads when the door cracks suddenly, or the flicker of an expiring candle makes the shadow of a bedpost dance upon the wall, nearer to our faces. I was vexed and insulted at finding myself, as I conceived, neglected, and I began to whimper, preparatory to a hearty bout of roaring; when to my surprise, I saw a solemn, but very pretty face looking at me from the side of the bed. It was that of a young lady who was kneeling, with her hands under the coverlet. I looked at her with a kind of pleased wonder, and ceased whimpering. She caressed me with her hands, and lay down beside me on the bed, and drew me towards her, smiling; I felt immediately delightfully soothed, and fell asleep again. I was wakened by a sensation as if two needles ran into my breast very deep at the same moment, and I cried loudly. The lady started back, with her eyes fixed on me, and then slipped down upon the floor, and, as I thought, hid herself under the bed. - Taken from "Carmilla" written by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu

Book Description
First serialized in the journal "The Dark Blue" and published shortly thereafter in the short story collection In a Glass Darkly, Le Fanu’s 1872 vampire tale is in many ways the overlooked older sister of Bram Stoker’s more acclaimed Dracula. A thrilling gothic tale, Carmilla tells the story of a young woman lured by the charms of a female vampire. This edition includes a student-oriented introduction, tracing the major critical responses to Carmilla, and four interdisciplinary essays by leading scholars who analyze the story from a variety of theoretical perspectives. Ranging from politics to gender, Gothicism to feminism, and nineteenth-century aestheticism to contemporary film studies, these critical yet accessible articles model the diverse ways that scholars can approach a single text. With a glossary, biography, bibliography, and explanatory notes on the text, this edition is ideal for students of Irish and British nineteenth-century literature.

Book Description
Young and lonely, Laura lives with her widowed father in a castle in Austria. When a carriage breaks down on their estate the mysterious Carmilla is brought into Laura’s life, who welcomes a potential friend. The girls become fast friends, although Laura can’t help but notice Carmilla’s strange behaviour – sleeping most of the day, sleepwalking, and refusing to talk about her family or past. And then there are the dreams of a large beast entering her room. Carmilla stands as a pioneering work in the vampire genre, predating even Bram Stoker’s Dracula and influencing generations of Gothic literature. Le Fanu’s narrative, with its haunting beauty and sensuous dread, explores themes of love, identity, and the macabre, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of horror fiction. Prepare to be seduced and unnerved by this timeless tale of forbidden passion and the darkness that lurks within the shadows. JOSEPH SHERIDAN LE FANU [1814-1873] was an Irish mystery and horror author. He had an enormous influence on the horror genre in the 19th and 20th century, especially through his championing of tone and effect rather than shock factor. Among his most noted work is the lesbian vampire novella Carmilla [1872] and mystery Uncle Silas [1864].
