Book Description
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a central role in the pathogenesis of several cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachyarrhythmias/fibrillation (VT/VF) and heart failure. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death -globally, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives each year ( 31 % of all deaths worldwide ). Mechanisms implicated in the pathophysiology of CVD include autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction, endothelial dysfunction , vasoconstriction, and systemic inflammation. Today, several therapeutic options are available to treat heart and cardiovascular patients, mainly medical therapies targeting specific pathways in vascular biology and physiology, centered around vasoconstriction, cell proliferation, sympathetic overactivity, defective renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and ANS imbalance. Those drugs have improved the quality of life and survival of patients. On the other hand, they do not cure the disease and are associated with side effects like dry cough, flushing, peripheral edema, hyperkalemia, hypotension, and reduction of cardiac output. Despite significant advances, CVDs remain a serious, life-threatening condition and new therapeutic modalities must be pursued. Neuromodulation therapies, which is one of the upsurging fields of modern medicine, involving a wide range of specialties and a variety of disorders. It is the process of stimulation, inhibition, regulation, or therapeutic alterations of the electrical or/and chemical activities, in the central, peripheral, or autonomic nervous systems that can be directed toward reverse/prevent progression of cardiovascular disease, by using implantable or non-implantable medical devices such as pacemakers, neural stimulators or micro-infusion pumps.

Electroconvulsive and Neuromodulation Therapies
Author: Conrad M. Swartz
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139478869
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 619
Book Description
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a psychiatric treatment involving the induction of a seizure through the transmission of electricity in the brain. Because of exploitation movies and greatly heightened drug company promotional activities ECT was used less frequently in the 1980s and 1990s. Eventually these movies were understood as unrealistic. Now these drugs are increasingly recognized as dangers to body health. Because of recent refinements and a far better scientific understanding of the clinical procedures and mechanisms underpinning ECT, this treatment modality has seen a resurgence in use and widespread appreciation of its safety. This book is the new definitive reference on electroconvulsive and neuromodulation therapies. It comprehensively covers the scientific basis and clinical practice of ECT as well as comparisons between ECT and medication therapies including the new generation of antipsychotic drugs. It also provides readers with administrative perspectives and specific details for the management of this modality in clinical practice. The new forms of nonconvulsive electrical and magnetic brain stimulation therapy are also covered in detail, in a separate section. The chapter authors are leading scholars and clinicians.

The Tumor
Author: John Grisham
Publisher: Focused Ultrasound Foundation
ISBN: 1495179419
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 71
Book Description
John Grisham says THE TUMOR is the most important book he has ever written. In this short book, he provides readers with a fictional account of how a real, new medical technology could revolutionize the future of medicine by curing with sound. THE TUMOR follows the present day experience of the fictional patient Paul, an otherwise healthy 35-year-old father who is diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Grisham takes readers through a detailed account of Paul’s treatment and his family’s experience that doesn’t end as we would hope. Grisham then explores an alternate future, where Paul is diagnosed with the same brain tumor at the same age, but in the year 2025, when a treatment called focused ultrasound is able to extend his life expectancy. Focused ultrasound has the potential to treat not just brain tumors, but many other disorders, including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, hypertension, and prostate, breast and pancreatic cancer. For more information or to order a free hardcopy of the book, please visit The Focused Ultrasound Foundation’s website www.fusfoundation.org. Here you will find a video of Grisham on the TEDx stage with the Foundation’s chairman and a Parkinson’s patient who brings the audience to its feet sharing her incredible story of a focused ultrasound “miracle.” Readers will get a taste of the narrative they expect from Grisham, but this short book will also educate and inspire people to be hopeful about the future of medical innovation.

Renal Denervation
Author: Richard R. Heuser
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1447152239
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 203
Book Description
Hypertension remains the leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in spite of current medical therapies. It has been estimated that 50% of Western civilization has hypertension and approximately 20% of patients have resistant hypertension. Renal denervation (RDN) is a minimally invasive, endovascular catheter based procedure using radiofrequency ablation aimed at treating resistant hypertension. Early studies show a high degree of effectiveness in renal denervation to treat hypertension. This book examines renal pathophysiology and the rationale for renal denervation, as well as possible long term benefits and risks of this new therapy. The myriad of devices involved in the evolution of this therapy are discussed and the book concludes with analyses of the cost effectiveness and future applications.

Brain and Heart Dynamics
Author: Stefano Govoni
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9783030280079
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
This ambitious and comprehensive handbook represents an essential contribution to our current understanding of interactions between heart and brain, a research topic generating growing interest. Despite the increasing awareness that neural mechanisms are the primary cause of cardiac disease and its progression, therapy continues to focus on end-organ protection and does not approach the neural core of the problem. Growing public health problems such as heart failure are still treated with autonomic drugs that are 30-40 years old and simply act on cardiac receptors. However, it has now been shown that the progression of ischemic heart disease to heart failure is mainly due to abnormal central responses to incipient cardiac disease, with neural activation the primary cause rather than the consequence of cardiac remodeling. Written by leading international experts in their respective research areas, the book presents a variety of perspectives on the core topic: from social and philosophical to gender-related aspects. It is designed for a broad readership and includes dedicated sections for cardiologists, psychiatrists, neurologists and psychotherapists looking for a more insightful and targeted approach to neuro-cardiovascular disease.
