Book Description
Carbaryl is registered for control of the western spruce budworm (Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman), at the dosage rate of 1.12 kg per hectare. That rate and two lower ones were field tested in western Montana in July 1979 to determine if a lower rate would be as effective as the registered dosage. Each dosage was applied to five randomly selected 20-ha plots by helicopter with Beecomist nozzles while larvae were in the fifth and early sixth instars. Reduced dosages of 0.28 and 0.56 kg a.i. per hectare resulted in 83 and 93 percent population reduction, respectively, compared with 93 percent population reduction for the registered dosage of 1.12 kg a.i. per hectare.

Seed Dissemination in Small Clearcuttings in North-central California
Author: Philip M. McDonald

Pages : 796
Book Description
In a 1964-1967 study on the Challenge Experimental Forest, seedfall was evaluated in 2-, 5-, and 10-acre circular clearcuttings. During the 4 years, 10 seed crops, ranging from light to bumper, were produced by ponderosa pine. white fir, Douglas-fir, and incense cedar. Seedfall ranged from 76 to 40,691 sound seed per acre (188 to 100,547/ha) for a single species in a given year. From 89 to 100 percent of each species' seed fell within an area 1 1/2 times the height of the average dominant tree. Overall, seed distribution was highly variable.

Aerial Field Tests of Five Insecticides on Western Spruce Budworm in Idaho and Montana, 1978-1980
Author: George P. Markin

ISBN:
Category : Aerial spraying and dusting in forestry
Languages : en
Pages : 6
Book Description
Each of five insecticides was applied at two or three application rates by helicopter to 20-ha plots. Effectiveness of each application rate against western spruce budworm (Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman) was judged by cornparing larval population reduction at I5 or 20 days after treatment against populations in untreated check plots. Performance of each insecticide was then compared with the levels of control normally obtained with two registered insecticides. carbaryl and acephate (90 + pct) usually used for western spruce budworrn control. Maximum population reduction from sulprofos (58 pct), phosmet (59 pet). and from the growth regulator BAY SIR- 8514 (58 pet), at all application rates tested was below the acceptable minimum of 90 + percent population reduction. Methomyl reduced populations 92.3 percent at 0.28 kg a.i./ha and 94.0 percent at 0.56 ke a.i./ha. Permethrin at 0.11 kg a.i.iha reduced the population by 93.9 percent. Methonyl and permethrin at these application rates appeared to be as effective as the registered insecticides acephate and carbaryl.
