L'objectif de mon travail de thèse a été de mener une caractérisation approfondie des dépôts se formant sur les pistons afin d'appréhender au mieux leur mécanisme de formation. Ces dépôts peuvent en effet provoquer une augmentation de la consommation d'huile conduisant à des rejets d'hydrocarbures pouvant perturber les post-traitements. Les essais moteurs, réalisés sur un moteur diesel poids lours D12D Volvo, ont permis de tester la performance de deux lubrifiants de formulations différentes. Nous avons conclu par cotation des pistons que la formation des dépôts était maximale dès les premières heures de l'essai moteur et qu'elle ne dépendait pas de la formulation du lubrifiant utilisé. Aux vues des résultats analytiques obtenus pas Spectroscopie de Photoélectrons (XPS) et Microscopie Electronique à Balayage et en Transmission (MEB, MET), les dépôts sont constitués en majorité de carbone (70 %m) incluant le carbone de l'huile oxydée et les suies, 20 %m de produits inorganiques de dégradation des additifs de l'huile et de 10 %m de particules d'usure (fer, chrome, aluminium). Nous avons ainsi montré qu'il n'y avait pas de cinétique ni chimique, ni morphologique de la formation des dépôts issus de la première gorge pendant l'essai moteur. Nous avons mis en évidence la présence de particules graphitiques creuses dans les dépôts et les suies, qui semblent intéressantes de par leur ressemblance avec les oignons de carbone, dont le rôle lubrifiant a récemmenty été montré.
