How do class, ethnicity, gender, and politics interact? In what ways do they constitute everyday life among ethnic minorities? In "Getting By," Donald M. Nonini draws on three decades of research in the region of Penang state in northern West Malaysia, mainly in the city of Bukit Mertajam, to provide an ethnographic and historical account of the cultural politics of class conflict and state formation among Malaysians of Chinese descent. Countering triumphalist accounts of the capitalist Chinese diaspora in Southeast Asia, Nonini shows that the Chinese of Penang (as elsewhere) are riven by deep class divisions and that class issues and identities are omnipresent in everyday life. Nor are the common features of "Chinese culture" in Malaysia manifestations of some unchanging cultural essence. Rather, his long immersion in the city shows, they are the results of an interaction between Chinese-Malaysian practices in daily life and the processes of state formation—in particular, the ways in which Kuala Lumpur has defined different categories of citizens. Nonini's ethnography is based on semistructured interviews; participant observation of events, informal gatherings, and meetings; a commercial census; intensive reading of Chinese-language and English-language newspapers; the study of local Chinese-language sources; contemporary government archives; and numerous exchanges with residents.

This book examines foreign capital's role in stimulating industrialization. Using both conventional and unconventional approaches, the author finds foreign capital to have played a positive role in Malaysia's industrialization. The branch- and industry-level analyses show generally strong pecuniary effects by foreign capital. Local-dominated branches and industries, however, show strong linkages with the domestic economy. The firm-level analysis tends to reveal strong technological spillovers from foreign capital. The book closes with regulatory prescriptions to enhance positive spillovers.

Is capitalism in Southeast Asia 'real' or a 'chimera', that is, some Southeast Asian derivative of capitalism that ultimately will not be sustainable? Malaysia, where an intimate relationship has been forged between the state and business in an effort to create Malay capitalists, presents an interesting and illuminating case in the debate. In this work Peter Searle identifies the complex interaction between the state, the dominant political party (UMNO) and business as the source of dynamism or defeat in the development of Malay capitalists. He also challenges a common view that Chinese business groups are completely different from Malay business groups. Overall this study argues against drawing sharp contrasts between dependency and self-reliance, between state and capital, and between rent-seekers and true 'productive' capitalists. Malaysian 'development' has been concentrated first in plantation crops, and more recently in industrial growth. The Malaysian Government has attempted to decentralize the country's industrial activities by setting up industrial estates in smaller towns and rural locations.This book traces the industrial growth of a rural subdistrict in Johor following the state's investment in the 1,000-hectare Pasir Gudang Industrial Estate on the Johor Straits, the inflow of considerable foreign and domestic capital, the establishment of several key industries, and a massivehousing development. It analyses the impact of these developments on the Malay rural kampongs, Chinese New Villages, agricultural plantations, and the FELDA resettlement scheme that existed prior to the establishment of the industrial estate.While the state is rightly proud of Pasir Gudang's impressive capital growth, it is less assured of the welfare and livelihood of its people. Industrial development has led to the displacement of the rural workforce and the increasing dependence of local residents on wage labour in factories. Thecreation of a large migrant population has strained public services to breaking point and further aggravated the problems of tenancy and squatting. In addition, severe social tensions and racial divisions have coloured the transformation of industrial and residential areas.
