Capital Market Prices, Management Forecasts, and Earnings Management
Author: Anne Beyer

Pages : 45
Book Description
The paper studies a manager's optimal earnings forecasting strategy and optimal earnings management policy in a setting where both the mean and the variance of the distribution generating the firm's cash flows are unknown. The paper shows that the equilibrium price of the firm is a function of the manager's forecast, the firm's reported earnings, and the squared error in the manager's earnings forecast. The model in the paper contains several predictions, including: (i) the manager manipulates earnings to reduce his forecast error at the earnings announcement date; (ii) the firm's stock price is more sensitive to the firm's actual earnings announcement than to the manager's forecast; and (iii) controlling for the level of reported earnings and the magnitude of the earnings surprise, the firm's price is higher when it has a positive surprise at the earnings announcement date than when it has a negative surprise.

The Effects of Competition
Author: George Symeonidis
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 9780262264655
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 558
Book Description
A theoretical and empirical study of the effects of competition across a broad range of industries. Policies to promote competition are high on the political agenda worldwide. But in a constantly changing marketplace, the effects of more intense competition on firm conduct, market structure, and industry performance are often hard to distinguish. This study combines game-theoretic models with empirical evidence from a "natural experiment" of policy reform. The introduction in the United Kingdom of the 1956 Restrictive Trade Practices Act led to the registration and subsequent abolition of explicit restrictive agreements between firms and the intensification of price competition across a range of manufacturing industries. An equally large number of industries were not affected by the legislation. Using data from before and after the 1956 act, this book compares the two groups of industries to determine the effect of price competition on concentration, firm and plant numbers, profitability, advertising intensity, and innovation. The book avoids two problems common to empirical studies of competition: how to measure the intensity of competition and how to unravel the links between competition and other variables. Because the change in the intensity of competition had an external cause, there is no need to measure the intensity of competition directly, and it is possible to identify one-way causal effects when estimating the impact of competition. The book also examines issues such as the industries in which collusion is more likely to occur; the effect of cartels and cartel laws on market structure and profitability; the links between competition, advertising, and innovation; and the constraints on the exercise of merger and antitrust policies.

Introduction to Earnings Management
Author: Malek El Diri
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319626868
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 120
Book Description
This book provides researchers and scholars with a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of earnings management theory and literature. While it raises new questions for future research, the book can be also helpful to other parties who rely on financial reporting in making decisions like regulators, policy makers, shareholders, investors, and gatekeepers e.g., auditors and analysts. The book summarizes the existing literature and provides insight into new areas of research such as the differences between earnings management, fraud, earnings quality, impression management, and expectation management; the trade-off between earnings management activities; the special measures of earnings management; and the classification of earnings management motives based on a comprehensive theoretical framework.

The Importance of Reporting Incentives
Author: David Burgstahler
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 49
Book Description
This paper examines how capital market pressures and institutional factors shape firms' incentives to report earnings that reflect economic performance. To isolate the effects of reporting incentives, we exploit the fact that, within the European Union, privately held corporations face the same accounting standards as publicly traded companies because accounting regulation is based on legal form. We focus on the level of earnings management as one dimension of accounting quality that is particularly responsive to firms' reporting incentives. We document that private firms exhibit higher levels of earnings management and that strong legal systems are associated with less earnings management in private and public firms. We also provide evidence that private and public firms respond differentially to institutional factors, such as book-tax alignment, outside investor protection and capital market structure. Moreover, legal institutions and capital market forces often appear to reinforce each other.

Earnings Management and Capital Market Misallocation
Author: Dennis J. Chambers

Book Description
This study seeks to find evidence of misallocation of invested capital caused by opportunistic earnings management. Investors, if unable to detect the direction and magnitude of the managed portion of reported earnings, may tend to over-value firms practicing income-increasing earnings management and under-value firms practicing income-decreasing earnings management. I test this possibility by measuring future abnormal returns from a trading rule based on the magnitude of earnings management. Using five separate and distinct methodologies, I find consistent evidence of significant positive abnormal trading returns from a hedge portfolio based on the magnitude of earnings management. These results represent evidence of significant mis-pricing associated with opportunistic earnings management.
