Book Description
Section 304(a) (1) of the Clean Water Act 33 U.S.C. 1314(a) (1) requires the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to publish and periodically update ambient water quality criteria. These criteria are to accurately reflect the latest scientific knowledge (a) on the kind and extent of all identifiable effects on health and welfare including, but not limited to, plankton, fish shellfish, wildlife, plant life, shorelines, beaches, aesthetics, and recreation which may be expected from the presence of pollutants in any body of water including ground water; (b) on the concentration and dispersal of pollutants, or their byproducts, through biological, physical, and chemical processes; and (c) on the effects of pollutants on biological community diversity, productivity, and stability, including information on the factors affecting rates of eutrophication and organic and inorganic sedimentation for varying types of receiving waters. In a continuing effort to provide those who use EPA's water quality and human health criteria with up-to-date criteria values and associated information, the document was assembled. The document includes summaries of all the contaminants for which EPA has developed criteria recommendations.

Book Description
This report describes the development of Canadian water quality guidelines for the nitrate ion for the protection of aquatic life. It contains a review of technical background information on the chemical & physical properties of nitrate & nitrate salts, the nitrogen cycle, natural & anthropogenic sources, fate & behaviour of nitrate in the environment, nitrate environmental concentrations, and effects of nitrates on aquatic organisms (including fish, plants, invertebrates, and semi-aquatic mammals & birds). The final section sets out nitrate concentration guidelines to protect fresh & marine water quality and aquatic life, and provides guidance on the application of the guidelines. Appendices include tables that summarize freshwater & marine toxicity studies.

Book Description
Aquatic Pollutants: Transformation and Biological Effects contains the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Aquatic Pollutants held at Noordwijkerhout (Amsterdam), The Netherlands on September 26-28, 1977. Organized into 47 chapters, this book first describes the aquatic pollutants and their potential biological effects. Subsequent chapters elucidate chemicals with pollution potential; multidetection approach to analysis of organic pollutants in water; volatilization of pollutants from water; microbial transformations of aromatic pollutants; and photochemical transformation of pollutants in water. Other chapters address oxidation of organic compounds in aquatic systems; laboratory microcosms for use in determining pollutant stress; continuous biomonitoring systems for detection of toxic levels of water pollutants; and health aspects of water recycling practices. This book will be useful as a review of existing knowledge in this field. It will also stimulate further thought and research.

Book Description
This document is intended to provide an overview of the major components of surface and ground water quality and how these relate to ecosystem and human health. Local, regional and global assessments of water quality monitoring data are used to illustrate key features of aquatic environments, and to demonstrate how human activities on the landscape can influence water quality in both positive and negative ways. Clear and concise background knowledge on water quality can serve to support other water assessments.

Book Description
"Malathion is a registered insecticide and acaricide used on a wide variety of sites including agricultural and non-agricultural sites. In 2018 (the most recent year for which data are available), over 25 000 kg of malathion was sold in Canada. Malathion may be released into surface water or soil as runoff from the application site. Malathion is not usually found in drinking water sources in Canada. Low levels of malathion have been found in several Canadian provinces. The maximum reported concentrations are well below the MAC. Malathion is rarely detected in foods"--Executive summary.

Book Description
This report focusses on four inorganic fluorides of environmental importance: hydrogen fluoride, calcium fluoride or fluorspar, sodium fluoride, and sulphur hexafluoride. It contains information on inorganic fluoride chemistry & speciation, analytical methods, natural & anthropogenic sources, fate & fluoride levels in the environment, fluoride bioaccumulation & bioconcentration, and effects of inorganic fluorides on aquatic organisms (including fish, plants, invertebrates, and semi-aquatic mammals & birds). The final section sets out fluoride concentration guidelines to protect recreational water quality, aesthetics, and aquatic life.
