Renewing Student Assistance in Canada:
Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 12
Book Description
This document outlines a package of proposals which, taken together, would provide a firm basis for a comprehensive system of student assistance benefiting low- and medium-income families alike, and provide aid as required for students in an efficient & equitable manner. The proposals build on & strengthen the existing Canada Student Loans Program. After an introduction on the extent of the student debt problem, solutions are offered based on a four pillar approach to accessibility: extension of special opportunity grants, deferred grants given some time after completion of studies, work-study programs, and a refinement of the tax system to encourage both savings for education and speedy pay-back of loans.

Student Loans in Canada
Author: Ross Finnie
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 180
Book Description
This book focuses primarily on student borrowing through the Canada Student Loans Program (CSLP). It reviews the operation of the CSLP through the early 1990s, including program finances and criticisms of the program. This sets the stage for an analysis of the experience of three cohorts of post-secondary graduates (of 1982, 1986, and 1990), examining the probability of graduating with a student loan, total amount borrowed, burden of student debt as measured by debt/earnings ratios, repayment rates, and reported repayment problems. Borrowing and repayment patterns were also examined by province, socio-economic background, and selected aspects of the educational experience. The book then summarizes the significant changes in the CSLP in the past few years and discusses these changes with reference to criticisms of the earlier CSLP. Finally, the book discusses the concept of income contingent repayment and concludes with a summary assessment of the new CSLP and a series of policy suggestions intended to guide student loan reform. Three comments on the main text are also included.
