Even as a teenager, Joseph Albert Calamia understood the need to live by the rule of law. In high school, a class bullys continual harassment of a skinny Hispanic kid led Joseph to confront him. But he wisely did so with the coachs permission, challenging the boy to a boxing match. The tormentor went down quickly and Calamia settled the score under the jurisdiction of the high school coach. Calamia began his career as a criminal defense attorney in El Paso, Texas, in 1949. He was a crusader for justice, considered by many to be akin to Don Quixote, tilting at windmills. But he disagreed, "The big difference is that my demons were real." His demons were the institutionalized practices that favored expediency over the rights of individuals; he spent his lifetime fighting to ensure peoples rights were not trampled by law makers and enforcers. A World War II veteran, Calamia grew up in El Pasos Segundo Barrio, a few blocks from the Rio Grande River that separated Mexico from the United States. He grew up in a world that expected those of Mexican descent to maintain their inferior status. But he couldnt stand by and let injustice occur without a fight. Joseph Papp (1921-1991), theater producer, champion of human rights and of the First Amendment, founder of the New York Shakespeare Festival and Public Theater, changed the American cultural landscape. Born Yussel Papirofsky in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, he discovered Shakespeare in public school and first produced a show on an aircraft carrier during World War II. After a stint at the Actors’ Lab in Hollywood, he moved to New York, where he worked as a CBS stage manager during the golden age of television. He fought Parks Commissioner Robert Moses (as well as Mayors Wagner, Lindsay, Beame and Koch) winning first the right to stage free Shakespeare in New York’s Central Park, then municipal funding to keep it going. He built the Delacorte Theater and later rebuilt the former Astor Library on Lafayette Street, transforming it into the Public Theater. In addition to helping create an "American" style of Shakespeare, Papp pioneered colorblind casting and theater as a not-for-profit institution. Cane barracks are a characteristic building of the pre-industrial cane farming landscape. Their significance lies in their social value as they have an important association with migration and settlement patterns in coastal Australia from northern NSW to Far North Queensland. The cane barracks provided temporary accommodation for cane gangs of six to twelve men and a cook, who were employed on a contracted basis during the cane cutting season. These men, and their families, came from many countries to Australia to work in the cane fields. Many of them choosing to settle in Queensland's sugar regions, providing the basis for the rich multicultural communities that exist today. Despite their significance there has been little research on cane barracks and sadly they are rapidly disappearing from our landscape. Not only does this publication document one of Queensland/the Sugar Industry's icons it also triggers awareness of the social, economic and cultural issues faced by regional Queenslanders due to the changes to the sugar industry.
