Book Description
A richly illustrated catalogue accompanies 'Cai Guo-Qiang: Falling Back to Earth'. the exhibition's interrelated themes of nature, spirituality and globalisation are a focus of the publication in essays by Australian and international authors, with extensive documentation of the artist's new works. Cai Guo-Qiang also writes on a significant, but lesser-known, aspect of his practice - his collaborations with children. the publication will also trace Cai's unique history with QAGOMA, as one of the first public institutions to collect the artist's work. It follows his early career inclusion in the 'Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art' (1996 and 1999) to the presentation, in 2013, of major new works by an artist at the height of his international career.

Book Description
First catalog to cover the range of materials used by Cai Guo-Qiang, from gunpowder and paint on canvas, porcelain and silk Covers the artist's entire career to date Accompanies an exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum concluding on 19 April 2020 Cai Guo-Qiang is famous for his work with gunpowder explosions and fireworks, with which he has created spectacular displays in almost 30 countries, in the skies across Asia, Europe and America. This catalog not only shows the artist's skills and innovation in using silk, porcelain and other materials together with gunpowder, but also how he adapts them to explore his own central concerns of creation, destruction, chance and the cosmos. Through gunpowder Cai has engaged with the environment in large-scale projects and with history in site-specific ones. These and other imaginative handlings of gunpowder sit within his work alongside the material's best-known manifestation - fireworks. He has depicted figurative images and human emotions with firework displays set against day and night skies, launched from buildings and rivers, and has also produced painterly designs on paper, canvas, silk, porcelain and, more recently, stone and glass. Cai is perhaps most widely recognized for the fireworks that played such a defining part in the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games.

Book Description
Cai Guo-Qiang, a Chinese artist known throughout the world for his exciting performances with fire, presents in this volume the works created in Naples as part of the project "In the Volcano". With these works, resulting from his "explosion workshop", the artist created a short circuit between our present and the memories of ancient Rome.0Cai Guo-Qiang, as a modern Prometheus, plays with his mastery in dominating the fire, and drawing on the powerful and suggestive traditions of the oriental world he crafts pyrotechnic works and performances with which he invites us to rediscover the inescapable bonds between the classical past and the modern sensibility, and in particular between the explosion that in 79 A.D. destroyed Pompei - paradoxically preserving it for us - and artistic creation.00Exhibition: Museo Archeologico, Naples, Italy (23.02-20.05.2019).

Book Description
"Cai's art is not tied to a particular style, form or type of material. He has used gunpowder in his works. He has used crabs on sand and a paper airplane gliding through a ruined cathedral. He has made statues out of mud, caused it to rain in the lobby of a museum where he constructed a bamboo bridge, and brought a horse into a museum with a nude model. Here is an artist who chooses his subject matter, his materials and form of expression with great freedom and has created a personal vocabulary that does not depend on anyone else's". -Pages 42-43.
