We introduce the notion of dynamic hierarchical caching, in which adaptive client hierarchies are constructed on a file-by-file basis. Trace-driven simulation and workload-driven runs of a prototype file system suggest that dynamic hierarchies can reduce server load substantially without the client performance penalties associated with more static schemes."

Middleware is everywhere. Ever since the advent of sockets and other virtu- circuit abstractions, researchers have been looking for ways to incorporate high- value concepts into distributed systems platforms. Most distributed applications, especially Internet applications, are now programmed using such middleware platforms. The focus of this work is on the issue of availability in distributed file systems. It presents the important new technique called disconnected operation, in which clients mask failures and voluntary network detachments by emulating the functionality of servers where actual server-oriented solutions are inadequate.
