Book Description
Excerpt from Cache Creek Environmental Restoration Program, Yolo County, California Purpose This restoration program was prepared to assist in the restoration of the Cache Creek riparian corridor. It reviews the historic and current conditions of this system and proposes specific restoration activities in that portion of the Creek historically subject to aggregate mining. Setting Much of the value of riparian systems is derived from the flow of water through a vegetated channel. Cache Creek historically provided significant riparian values for groundwater recharge, erosion control, water quality improvement and wildlife habitat. Today, the Cache Creek riparian system often has low to moderate values resulting from the near absence of riparian habitats and the low habitat diversity. These conditions are especially observable within the approximately 10-mile stretch of Creek known as the mining reach. Existing conditions in the mining reach, i.e., the deep trapezoidal contours and the lack of riparian woodlands and marshes, do provide for the reduction of flood hazards in this reach (an important local value) and for the deposition of the heaviest sediments in the same area, thereby providing easy access for continued mining. However, these same conditions increase flooding downstream, promote the movement of fine sediment into the settling basin (where it reduces basin capacity and further exacerbates flood heights), encourage bank erosion and significantly limit the habitat value. Furthermore, because riparian values both up- and downstream of this reach are higher, the mining reach is a significant weak link in the entire Creek system.
