Greek theories of elementary cognition from Alcmaeon to Aristotle, by John I. Beare. The aim of this book is to give a close General historical account of the various theories, partly physiological and partly psychological, by which the Greek philosophers from Alcmaeon to Aristotle endeavoured to explain the elementary phenomena of cognition. The pre-Aristotelean writers who applied themselves to this subject, and of whose writings we possess any considerable information, are Alcmaeon of Crotona, Empedoicles, Democritus, Anaxagoras, Diogenes of Apollonia, and Plato. We propose to set forth here their speculations, together with those of Aristotle, as to the so-called Five Senses, Sensation in general, and the psychical processes, such as Imagination and Memory, which involve the synthetic function referred by Aristotle to Sense, and named by his Latin commentators the Sensits Communis. When she sat down to write her poem Come Away after the death of her husband David, she had written no poems for a quarter of a century. Then came a sequence of incredibly moving elegies. Other poems followed, and two years after starting to write again, she won the Cheltenham Festival poetry competition. Her first collection That Winter (Bloodaxe, 1986) was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Poetry Prize.
