Book Description
Whistleblowing has become a burning issue in contemporary society. When is whistleblowing appropriate? How is it best carried out? And how should managers and employers handle the issue? This book takes a look at whistleblowing at work taking a group of key occupation -- including the Health Service, Local Government, Accountancy and Education -- and from different points of view, including those of the employer, the trade unions and the employed. A whistleblower speaks for herself; advice is given on the whistleblower's best route; and the ethical issues are weighed and the legal situation set out. This book is invaluable to those concerned with employment, personnel, and human resource management; and to all those working in whistleblowing territory.

Book Description
This analytical book examines how the common law of the employment contract is likely to evolve. Tracing the radical evolution of this area over the last 40 years, it explores how many of the changes in common law have been triggered by the judicial ‘discovery’ of the key attributes of the relationship. The author concludes that these key attributes of the contract, including the imbalance of power between employee and employer, are likely to remain the key driver for change.

Book Description
Nobody’s Law shows how people – who are disappointed, disenchanted, and outraged about the justice system – gradually move away from law. Using detailed case studies and combining different theoretical perspectives, this book explores the legal consciousness of ordinary people, businessmen, and street-level bureaucrats in the Netherlands. The empirical research in this study tells an original and alternative narrative about the role of law in everyday life. While previous studies emphasize the law’s hegemony and argue that it’s ‘all over’, Hertogh shows that legal proliferation makes it harder for people to know, and subsequently identify with, the law. As a result, official law has become increasingly remote and irrelevant to many people. The central finding presented in this highly topical text is that these developments signal a process of ‘legal alienation’— a gradual and mundane process with potentially serious consequences for the legitimacy of law. A timely and original study, this book will be of particular interest to scholars in the fields of law and society, socio-legal studies and legal theory.

Book Description
This book is an analytical study of the current English law of traditional contracts of employment and of other personal employment contracts. Concentrating on the common law basis of individual employment law, it takes full account of relevant British and European Community legislation up to and including the Employment Act 2002, and considers the impact of the Human Rights Act 1998 and of the developing law of human and social rights more generally. In this work the author has up-dated and built upon his earlier treatise on the Contract of Employment published in 1975. The present work takes account of the very considerable amount of case-law, legislation and legal writing which has affected the law of the contract of employment since the earlier treatise was written. However, the present work aims to do more than providing a second edition of The Contract of Employment. It addresses a wider range of employment relationships than the previous work did; in fact, it argues for and is constructed around a whole new category of employment contracts, which includes not only contracts of employment but also other personal employment contracts", a concept which the author articulates and justifies. Within that novel conceptual framework, many of the major features of the law of employment contracts are re-examined and presented in unfamiliar and challenging terms. Thus, the employer is re-conceptualized as the "employing enterprise", the bilateral structure ofemployment contracts is re-evaluated, and new explanations are advanced for the functioning of the law of termination of employment contracts and of remedies for wrongful termination."

Book Description
The Annual Scientist-Practitioner Conferences in Industrial Organizational Psychology were conceived by the Department of Psychology at Old Dominion University as a means to foster exchange of information, points of view, and insights among those who are engaged in research in the behavioral and social sciences, and those who, in various business, industrial, managerial, organizational, and educational roles, are actively engaged in work affording opportun ities to apply the findings and concepts generated by scientific study (many people do both). Our vested interest and our hope is that the stimulus provided by these exchanges will help us and our professional cohorts in psychology and other disciplines to advance the cutting edge of theory and application in problem areas of present and prospective importance. The first of these conferences took place in 1980, and had as its theme, "Performance Appraisal. " The papers here constitute the substantive contributions to the second conference which addressed issues pertinent to "The Changing Composition of the Workforce. " It should be noted that although industrial-organizational psychologists continue to claim parentage, this meeting can lay claim to an interdisciplinary lineage, validated by the presence on its panels and among the other invited participants of economists, labor officials, educators, personnel administrators, gerontolo gists, sociologists, business managers, and military officers, as well as others of unknown origins.
