Book Description
Folks all over West Texas and eastern New Mexico will tell you: Cowdens have been ranching here for as long as anyone can remember. The Cowdens, in fact, have been at the forefront of the cattle business for 150 years. Arriving in Texas in the 1850s, Cowden men and women raised and trailed cattle, sought out water and better grazing land, tangled with Comanches—and helped extend the western line of Anglo settlement as they raised their families. They eventually moved to New Mexico, where they established the renowned JAL Ranch. Award-winning writer Michael Pettit, a Cowden descendant and former rancher, offers a compelling portrait of this genuine American ranching family. Riding for the Brand spans six generations and two states to serve up a real slice of the Old West, complete with cowboys and Indians, cattle and buffalo, open range and barbed wire. Pettit skillfully blends family saga with an urbanite’s firsthand look at life on today’s 50,000-acre Cowden Ranch, where the one dependable factor is the constant wind. Riding for the Brand traces the evolution of the Texas and New Mexico cattle business from the era of intimate ranching communities to today’s oil-enriched or corporate operations. But it’s also the story of one man’s search for identity through his connections to a family, a place, and a way of life.

Book Description
From his beginnings as a Civil War army scout and later as a celebrated buffalo hunter, lawman, and rancher Lane Collier symbolizes the tenacity and resourcefulness of the North American plains frontiersman during the second half of the 19th century. Such men clawed a living and built a civilization from seemingly barren grasslands and hostile prairie where only vast herds of bison and the Indian reigned supreme for centuries.

Book Description
At age fifteen, Laban Samuel Records (1856-1940), the youngest of twelve children, moved west with his family from Indiana to Kansas. About sixty-six years later, writing in pencil on Big Chief tablets, he remembered this move and his other western experiences through the year 1892, when he settled with his wife and children on the claim he had staked in the Cheyenne-Arapaho Run. In the intervening years, Laban was a freighter with his brother on the Santa Fe Trail and a cowpuncher in the Dodge City stockyards. He first encountered Indians on the banks of the Verdigris River in southern Kansas, learned the Osage language, and become an agency cook at Pawhuska. Later he worked in the Cherokee Outlet as a line rider for the T-5 and Spade ranches, eventually becoming a foreman. Because of Laban's firsthand knowledge of people and events, his account adds a new perspective to several infamous episodes. For example, he barely escaped the raid Dull Knife and other Cheyenne warriors in 1878, and he knew the participants in the Medicine Lodge bank robbery, the Talbot raid at Caldwell, and the Potts-Franklin shootout on the T-5 Ranch. In addition, Laban recounted many affectionate and often humorous stories about Outlet ranchers such as Maj. Andrew Drumm, Outlet cowpunchers such as Charlie Siringo, Texas trail drivers such as "Shanghai" Pierce, and western writers such as Thomas McNeal of the Medicine Lodge Cresset, Scott Cummings (the "Pilgrim Bard"), and Pawnee Bill. But perhaps most memorable are Laban's stories of every day cowboy life: herding cattle with his dog Shep, riding his favorite horses, and surviving the rigors encountered by everyone on the western range-tornadoes, rattlesnakes, cold and snow, outlaws, and hard work. Laban concludes, "The great open range that I know so well, worked on so hard, and loved so much ... [has] vanished, as have the signs of the old cow trail." Perhaps so, but thanks to Ellen Jayne Maris Wheeler's organization of these stories, and to Laban's colorful and entertaining writing, the readers of Cherokee Outlet Cowboy can still ride that range and see that old cow trail for themselves.

To still his doubts with God, Alexander Covington devotes a year of his life to a missionary post in Africa where he comes to grips with Father Pretorious whose worship for food program forments disastrous results for all concerned. Arriving as the mission chapel is burning, Alexander finds the missionary outpost less like a fertile fixture of God nestled in the African bushveld, but the driving force behind Saku, the black chief and his marauding force whose domain Father Pretorious serves. Saku, an old foe and once friend of Father Pretorious, now wages continuous war on the priest and his God, his only purpose to destroy them both. Thrust into this cauldron of hate and distrust, Alexander encounters Sabela, an African beauty educated in Europe to whom he loses his heart. "Then show me your power of this god of yours," Sabela teased. "Jump from this kloof and if he is truly your god and loves you, he will catch you from falling on the rocks below." When at last, God seeks him to choose, Alexander Covington's fate is sealed to one and all-God ...Sabela...Africa...
