Book Description
The Works of Eugene Field is a collection of poetry and essays by American author Eugene Field, originally published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1896 under the title The Writings in Prose and Verse of Eugene Field. Known for his children's poetry, especially the light-hearted "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod," Field was a journalist who found his niche in poetry and humor writing. The original collection, published after Field's death and including artwork and letters from the author, is a charming set of books compiling all his works. Republished here for young readers and collectors of Americana, The Works of Eugene Field is sure to delight audiences young and old. Volume XII of this twelve-volume set, Sharps and Flats II, is part two of a collection of poetry and essays and the final book in the series. The frontispiece is a facsimile of the newspaper office where Field worked, designed by the author himself. EUGENE FIELD (1850-1895) was an American author known for his humorous essays and children's poetry. Interested in many subjects and unable to decide what to do with his life, Field attended three colleges-Williams College, Knox College, and University of Missouri-tried his hand at acting, law, and journalism, and traveled Europe before meeting his wife and becoming city editor for the St. Joseph Gazette in St. Joseph, Missouri. He wrote and edited for several newspapers, establishing himself as a humor writer and publishing poetry. He died of a heart-attack at 45.

Book Description
This volume contains Q's fictionalised accounts of: - - The 1527 wreck of the, Portuguese treasure ship, Saint Andrew and the seizure of its cargo by local gentry. - The first ruler, First White Rajah, of Sarawak who retired to Burraton on Dartmoor. - Westcountry folk who became pirates including Harry Glasby who became an accidental pirate on account of his seizure due to both his musical and navigational skills. The volume concludes with Sabine Baring-Gould's authoritative account of the life of the First White Rajah, Sir James Brooke, and a description of the life of the unfortunate and reluctant pirate Harry Glasby. Now surpassed in fame by his daughter's best friend, Daphne Du Maurier, Arthur Quiller-Couch was the pre-eminent Cornish writer of Victorian and Edwardian times and founder of the School of English Literature at Cambridge University. He is of particular interest since his fiction was very often informed by factual events now passed from memory.

Book Description
This collection of tales and traditions from the Southwest includes stories of lost mines stacked with bars of gold, mule loads of silver cached away in outlaw hoards, and fabulous Jesuit treasures buried when that order was expelled from New Spain. Some treasure locations would be rediscovered by chance or by an old map-and somehow always lost again. But not all these folk teasures are of material wealth. There is the story of a nun who loved a soldier and repented, and whose kneeling figure may still be seen as a mountain rock formation. There is the Hermit of Las Vegas, an actual person who, after traveling between Argentina and Quebec, settled in New Mexico, where he became the subject of affectionate legends.
