Book Description
Covers three inter-related themes: Britain's entry into the European Community and its effect on the transatlantic relationship; the 1973 Arab-Israeli war; and the impact of the energy crisis on inter-allied relations. Focusing primarily upon intra-allied relations, this text also traces the evolution of the transatlantic relationship during Britain's first year in the European Community. The papers cover British reactions to Henry Kissinger's attempt to redefine America's link with Europe through his "Year of Europe" initiative, the energy crisis and the fourth Arab/Israeli War of October 1973, shed new light on some of the more occult aspects of President Nixon's diplomacy, and reveal the problems faced by Edward Heath's government in seeking to maintain its close ties with Washington while trying to establish its credentials as a fully committed EC member state.

Book Description
Never in the lifetime of most British adults has there been such uncertainty about the future of the political and governing institutions of the state. Brexit has the potential to change everything – from the shape of government institutions, to the main political parties, from Britain's relationship with its near neighbour Ireland to its international trading. The idealists of the Leave campaign won their vote in 2016. But now the realists are gently taking over. Here, Denis MacShane explains how the Brexit process will be long and full of difficulties – arguing that a 'Brexiternity' of negotiations and internal political wrangling in Britain lies ahead.

Book Description
This is the first monograph-length study that charts the coercive diplomacy of the administrations of Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford as practised against their British ally in order to persuade Edward Heath's government to follow a more amenable course throughout the 'Year of Europe' and to convince Harold Wilson's governments to lessen the severity of proposed defence cuts. Such diplomacy proved effective against Heath but rather less so against Wilson. It is argued that relations between the two sides were often strained, indeed, to the extent that the most 'special' elements of the relationship, that of intelligence and nuclear co-operation, were suspended. Yet, the relationship also witnessed considerable co-operation. This book offers new perspectives on US and UK policy towards British membership of the European Economic Community; demonstrates how US détente policies created strain in the 'special relationship'; reveals the temporary shutdown of US-UK intelligence and nuclear co-operation; provides new insights in US-UK defence co-operation, and re-evaluates the US-UK relationship throughout the IMF Crisis.

Book Description
In 1962, almost one million people were evacuated from Algeria. France called these citizens Repatriates to hide their French Algerian origins and to integrate them into society. This book is about Repatriation and how it became central to France's postcolonial understanding of decolonization, the Algerian past, and French identity.
