Whereas in western countries breastfeeding is an uncontroversial, purely personal issue, in most parts of the world mother and baby form part of a network of interpersonal relations with its own rules and expectations. In this study, the author examines the cultural and social context of breastfeeding among the Gogo women of the Cigongwe's village in Tanzania, as part of the Paediatric Programme of Doctors with Africa, based in Padua. The focus is on mothers' behaviour and post partum taboos as key elements in Gogo understanding of the vicissitudes of the breast feeding process. This nutritional period is subject to many different events both physical and social that may upset the natural and intense link between mother and child. Background: Currently, the research that is available on the impact of breastfeeding and sexuality has targeted White pregnant or postpartum women with little emphasis on non-White and non-pregnant women. The majority of women make infant feeding decisions based on preconceptions established before they even become pregnant. Some women may choose not to breastfeed because of the potential impact on sexuality. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a scale to assess non-pregnant Black women's perceptions of how breastfeeding might impact their sex lives. Methods: The study utilized a two-phase mixed methods approach. Phase 1 responses were collected using a semi-structured interview guide based on the Theory of Planned Behavior. Phase 2 utilized a cross-sectional online survey that was driven by the Theory of Planned Behavior and informed by phase 1 themes. Results: A total of 12 participants completed phase 1 protocols and a total of 135 participants completed phase 2 protocols. Participants articulated a variety of themes regarding their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about breastfeeding and the impact that breastfeeding may have on a woman's sex life. The mean score on the BASIS was 2.13 ± .38. An exploratory Factor Analysis, face validity, and predictive capacity together demonstrated that the BASIS did not yield a Cronbach's Alpha level above .80 to represent adequate reliability. Conclusion: Future researchers should collect data regarding the impact of breastfeeding on sex life with the validated BASIS. Doing so will provide researchers a better understanding of what educational materials and interventions should be created in order to assist non-pregnant Black woman who want to breastfeed in the future overcome impacts on their sex lives that are perceived to be bothersome.

Abstract: Objective: understand the influence of breastfeeding on the experience of sexuality from the perspective of a group of recent mothers. Method: descriptive and qualitative research conducted with women who were experiencing puerperium. Data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews and submitted to thematic content analysis of the operative proposal. Results: the experience of sexuality during breastfeeding was marked by discomfort related to changes in sexual relationship, bodily changes, restricted time of the women with the partner, besides some negative behaviors of the partner. In other cases, breastfeeding did not bring significant changes in the experience of sexuality, contributing to the friendship and partnership between the couple. Conclusions: It is necessary to broaden the perspectives on the theme of sexuality during breastfeeding, perceiving it as a basic human need that needs to be discussed among women, couples and healthcare professionals
