Book Description
In 2011, the first edition of Campus Confidential sparked a lively debate about what is really going on inside our colleges and universities. The media and readers alike welcomed this readable, honest book. University authorities didn't. They took the authors to task for spilling the beans. In this second edition, Ken S. Coates and Bill Morrison pick up where they left off, adding new and up-to-date information for students and their parents to consider. Among the questions they address: Why more students should consider the skilled trades Whether a BA is ever worth the paper it's printed on How roving administrators are undermining universities Why we over-produce graduate students What's right (and wrong) with what's happening on campuses in Quebec Now that nearly everyone goes to college or university but only a small percentage of graduates actually find employment in their chosen field, understanding what's really going on in Canadian postsecondary institutions is more important than ever. Readers can count on Ken S. Coates and Bill Morrison for unexpected insights and lots of fresh new ideas and information.

Book Description
In the international effort to advance human health, welfare, and development while better managing and conserving the environment and natural resources, there is a clear and growing recognition of the role of scientific and technical knowledge in global governance. This has created an urgent need for the United Nations to equip itself with the capability to bring scientific knowledge to inform international decision making. Given the complexity and diversity of United Nations programs, organs, and mandates, this report focuses on the main functions of the United Nations that affect international governance in the fields related to sustainable development, with reference to the taxonomy of the key United Nations organs in which these functions are undertaken. Efforts have been made to ensure that the major categories of United Nations organs have been covered and therefore the results of the review are representative of the functioning of the United Nations system.

Book Description
The Extreme Principle is to do what matters most and to do what works best. When educational decisions and actions are guided by The Extreme Principle, results improve. The Extreme Principle helps teachers, school administrators, superintendents, school board members, and politicians make decisions and take actions that improve schools because the decisions and actions are based on what matters most and what works best. This book gives the reader a critique of the typical, bureaucratic, mandated education reform efforts which often fail and which often lead to another education reform effort which also is likely to fail. This book shows a better way to improve what is done in classrooms, throughout a school, in an entire school district, and at the state or national levels of education policy development. The better way is guided by application of The Extreme Principle. The reader of this book_teacher, school administrator, political leader, citizen_will find that the common sense ideas and real world examples from this book lead to a very obvious conclusion: that the way to improve education is to do what matters most and to do what works best.

Book Description
Consisting of 192 Member States, the United Nations was founded in 1945 to maintain international peace and security; to develop friendly relations among nations based on the respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples; to achieve international cooperation in solving problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character; and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion. Just how successful the UN has been in maintaining these goals is covered in The A to Z of the United Nations. Author Jacques Fomerand provides a comprehensive dictionary of nearly 900 cross-referenced entries on the UN's various committees and organizations, its leaders, terms, policies, and major events in which the UN took part. Supplementing the dictionary entries are a chronology, an introduction, a bibliography, and appendixes, which include a reproduction of the UN's Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as a list of the Member States and when they joined.

Book Description
Developing a Dream Destination is an interpretive history of tourism and tourism policy development in Hawai‘i from the 1960s to the twenty-first century. Part 1 looks at the many changes in tourism since statehood (1959) and tourism’s imprint on Hawai‘i. Part 2 reviews the development of public policy toward tourism, beginning with a story of the planning process that started around 1970—a full decade before the first comprehensive State Tourism Plan was crafted and implemented. It also examines state government policies and actions taken relative to the taxation of tourism, tourism promotion, convention center development and financing, the environment, Honolulu County’s efforts to improve Waikiki, and how the Neighbor Islands have coped with explosive tourism growth. Along the way, author James Mak offers interpretations of what has worked, what has not, and why. He concludes with a chapter on the lessons learned while developing a dream destination over the past half century.
