Book Description
Excerpt from Book Plates and Their Value This Book is introduced as a handy Amateur's Guide to the Collection and Study of Book-Plates. The object in writing it has been to ear-mark, as it were, a selection of the most noticeable plates and to assign them, in as few words as possible, to the respective classes to which they belong, as well as to take a popular survey of the subject of Book-Plate Collecting. I think that the priced catalogue of plates contained in the second part of the work may not be without its uses, while the advantage of having, for the first time, an alphabetical list of some of the most representative specimens to refer to, will be sufficiently obvious. Book Description
Excerpt from Artists and Engravers of British and American Book Plates: A Book of Reference for Book Plate and Print Collectors T is not the intention of this work to go over the ground which has now been traversed so many times by a number of able writers, nor to say anything about the history, style, or collection of the book plate. This is simply a compilation which was begun and continued for my own use, and is now presented to my brother collectors at their request, many of them having found my manuscript useful for reference for some time past. It is hoped that in its present form it will also be of some use to the general print collector. About twelve years ago I commenced in an interleaved copy of the Hon. J. Leicester Warren's Guide to the Study of Book Plates to make additions to the list of engravers and their work contained therein. But it was soon apparent that interleaving alone would not contain a fraction of the additional names that were constantly turning up. In the year 1890 Sir Wollaston Franks, who had been keeping a similar list for some years, took the trouble to copy out for me a list of the artists and engravers which he had accumulated; this was without any names of the plates which they had executed. A glance at the two lists was sufficient to compel me to remove the whole to a manuscript volume which has been in constant use ever since. Book Description
Excerpt from The Book-Plates of William Fowler Hopson His work stands another test, secondary but not unimportant, that of the discerning collector who gathers many book-plates and finds it necessary both for convenience and in changing standards of what is desirable, to weed out the negligible and preserve only the truly good. In these moments the plates of Mr. Hopson remain. Many plates which seemed interesting when acquired, come in a few months to raise the query in the collectors' mind, What did I see in that plate that made me want to keep it? The book-plates by Mr. Hopson give more instead of less pleasure as the years pass. In looking over the collection of his plates, one realizes soon that a sense of monotony rather ftc quently felt in the work of many other engravers, does not lay its depressing hand upon his enthusiasm in going completely through the list of Mr. Hopson's work. On the surface this might seem to be due to the pictorial character of the larger number of his plates. Who does not like to look at pictures? Reflection shows that while the pictorial fact, giving its wealth of possibilities of change is an important factor in the sustained interest of his work, other features contribute largely to it, as the absence of the frivolous, the sense of enduring quality each one possesses, the evidence of thought and earnest work, whether in depicting his own designs, or in te producing those of others, brought to him by clients. Mr. Hopson has worked as faithfully to give full value to the designs of others, as he has to give permanence to his own. Again, there is an inward sense of honor which the observer appreciates as the successful pro jection of the personality of the engraver into his work, so that each plate lives, tells its story, and loses nothing in repeated examination. Mr. Hopson is happy too, in creating an artistic feeling, in giving form and color to his work. Color, not perhaps considered by many as possible in the engraved book-plate, is in truth a very present and distinguishing mark of his work. Harmony of form and color to scheme and design is noticeable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Ladies' Book-Plates: An Illustrated Handbook for Collectors and Book-Lovers In this little monograph an attempt has been made to trace the history of women's plates and to give some account of those ex-libris which seem to call for special attention, either from the interest attached to the owners, or for the intrinsic merit of the designs. With the assistance of many well known collectors, a list of ladies' plates has been drawn up, and however imperfect and faulty, as the first of such lists must always be, it is hoped that it may yet prove useful to collectors of these dead leaves. In describing a lady's plate, armorial has always been employed to signify that the arms are on a simple lozenge, in every other case the words shield or oval have been added. The correct inscription on each plate, as far as can be ascertained, is printed in italics in the list. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
