Boiling Heat Transfer for Cryogenics
Author: J. D. Seader
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Ebullition
Languages : en
Pages : 188
Book Description
An extensive survey of available information from the literature on heat transfer to boiling hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen is presented. Included are a bibliography of available experimental data, a summary of boiling theory, graphical comparisons of the experimental data, and compilations of pertinent physical properties for each of the three cryogenic fluids. Based upon the results of the survey, recommendations are made for a test program to provide critical information there data are lacking.

Nucleate and Film Boiling in Reduced Gravity from Horizontal and Vertical Wires
Author: Robert Siegel
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Film boiling
Languages : en
Pages : 48
Book Description
Nucleate boiling was studied experimentally from electrically heated horizontal and vertical wires (0.0197-in. diam.) in water, ethyl alcohol, and 60-percent-by-weight aqueous sucrose solution in gravity fields of 0.014 and 1.0 times Earth gravity. The fluids were at their saturation temperatures at atmospheric pressure. The gravity reduction to 0.014 times Earth gravity caused a shift of only a few degrees in the curve of heat flux as a function of the difference between surface and saturation temperatures. Film boiling of ethyl alcohol was observed at Earth gravity and at several reduced gravity fields down to 0.014 times Earth gravity. For both the horizontal and vertical orientations, the gravity field and the circumferential surface tension at the interface of the vapor film surrounding the thin wire proved to be very important for the determination of the vapor removal pattern. As gravity was reduced, the vapor film behavior for the vertical orientation approached that for the horizontal position. A motion picture film is available that illustrates the boiling behavior in reduced gravity.

Progress in Refrigeration Science and Technology

ISBN: 1483223604
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 802
Book Description
Progress in Refrigeration Science and Technology, Volume I is a collection of papers from the Eleventh International Congress of Refrigeration held in Munich in August-September 1963. These papers deal with the various scientific and technical aspects, designs, and technology of refrigeration. One paper explains technological advances in the use of very low temperature fluids, namely liquid hydrogen and liquid helium as rocket fuels, as bubble chambers, in the study of mesons or hyperons, and in experiments involving the reaction of metals in a wide range of temperature. Another paper examines the requirements for improved food refrigeration and the limitations of certain methods when compared to other cold processing forms. Freeze-drying is also used in biology such as in freeze-drying of biological solutions, tissues, or living organisms. One paper explains the purification method for obtaining very pure hydrogen at high pressures to be used in comparative experiments on the thermodynamical properties of ortho- and para-hydrogen, and their mixtures. Another paper investigates the effect of heat exchange between capillary tube and suction line on the performance of small hermetic compressor systems. This collection is suitable for engineers or technologists in the area of refrigeration, as well as for scientists involved in the space industry and materials research.
