Book Description
What, if anything, does Jesus of Nazareth have to do with philosophy? This question motivates this collection of essays from leading theologians, philosophers, and biblical scholars. Part I portrays Jesus in his first-century intellectual and historical context, attending to intellectual influences and contributions and contemporaneous similar patterns of thought. Part II examines how Jesus influenced two of the most prominent medieval philosophers. It considers the seeming conceptual shift from Hebraic categories of thought to distinctively Greco-Roman ones in later Christian philosophers. Part III considers the significance of Jesus for some prominent contemporary philosophical topics, including epistemology and the meaning of life. The focus is not so much on how 'Christianity' figures in such topics as on how Jesus makes distinctive contributions to them.

Book Description
This is a thought-provoking life-enhancing book addressed to ordinary men and women in the 21st century, that helps resolve a broad spectrum of moral dilemmas. Through the presentation of familiar dialogue, and a realistic yet poetic narrative, the author introduces a discussion of the greatest ethical issues of our age. His core thesis is explored through the Bully/Anti-Bully principle in reaching what may be found to be incontrovertible truths.There are philosophical problems that every one of us grapples with, e.g., abortion, injustice, euthanasia, infidelity, 'just' wars, blackmail, murder, theft, rape and torture. It is the problem of who started it, who reacted, who over-reacted, who was rich and had power and influence, who was poor and never had a chance.Surprisingly, or maybe not, at the heart of this there is only ONE philosophical issue. A concept so central to all our lives that it is far too important to leave only to academic philosophers, politicians, priests and pundits. In the words of the author, "e;listen, come closer. I have only one story to tell, but it is the only story - all other stories are but gilded versions, permutations of a story as old as time, as old as our time upon this earth, the time of the humans. Older than the Koran, older than the Bible or the Talmud, older than the Tao Te Ching, the Pali Canon or the Upanishads, older than Abraham, Adam or Noah, this is the oldest human story ever told: the Story of Morality."e;His concluding words raise one of the great questions of our time when he writes, "e;It is the job of all Religions to bow their knees and doff their hats to Morality, not the other way round. One of the functions of Religion is to serve morality. It is never the function of Morality to serve Religion. Morality is the older partner."e;

Book Description
The slaughter of animals as a religious ritual and the execution of human beings as a judicial one was an interrelated phenomenon in the ancient world. Writings from different traditions had to be interpreted in relation to each other for the connection between two sacred rituals to be made. The history of the death penalty within the textual traditions of Judaism and ancient Greece could be traced to specific commandments beginning in Genesis and in laws specified as early as in Hesiod's Theogony--in each case, however, with far from unambiguous conclusions despite their divine origins in YHWH or Zeus. An ever-present uncertainty in the nature of the death penalty pervades the writings of the Bible from Genesis to the Gospels of Jesus, as well as in the mytho-poetic world of Hesiod, the tragedy of Aeschylus, and Socratic philosophy as represented in Plato's dialogues. Scholarship has not considered the importance of these two interrelated traditions insofar as both expose the specific characteristics of violence and killing within the institutions of religion and the law. The creation of religious rituals and the acts of the law are inseparable and essential to the authority of the politico-religious state. Animal sacrifice and the death penalty serve as the pillars of social legitimacy in the ancient world.
