Book Description
Plant Pathology: An Advanced Treatise, Volume I: The Diseased Plant presents an integrated synthesis of the scope, importance, and history of plant pathology, emphasizing the concept of disease, not of diseases. The book focuses on pathological processes, defense devices, predisposition, and therapy of the diseased plant. It explores the normal pathways that are obstructed in sick plants; how the pathogen causes dysfunction; and how the host plant reacts to the pathogen. This book also considers the logistics and the strategy of disease and how to combat it. This volume is organized into 15 chapters and begins with an overview of plant pathology, its history, and its relation to other sciences, along with plant predisposition to disease, and the resistance-susceptibility problem. The next chapters examine how sickness in plants is recognized and diagnosed, the tissue breakdown in diseases, and the effects of parasites on the processes in plants. The impact of disease on water balance and respiration in plants and the histology of disease resistance in plants are also explained. This volume also covers the physiological and chemical basis of defense by higher plants against potential or invading pathogens and the hypersensitivity concept in plant pathology. The final chapter discusses the physical and chemical therapy of the diseased plant. This book will appeal to all who are interested in a theoretical treatment of plant pathology and in the broad ecological relationships among organisms, as well as to research workers and advanced students of applied biology.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Apple-Tree: The Open Country Books No; 1 The wind is snapping in the bamboos, knocking together the resonant canes and weaving the myriad flexile wreaths above them. The palm heads rustle with a brisk crinkling music. Great ferns stand in the edge of the forest, and giant arums cling their arms about the trunks of trees and rear their dim jacks-in-the-pulpit far in the branches; and in the greater distance I know that green parrots are flying in twos from tree to tree. The plant forms are strange and various, making mosaic of contrasting range of leaf-size and leaf-shape, palm and grass and fern, epiphyte and liana and clumpy mistletoe, of grace and clumsiness and even misproportion, a tall thick landscape all mingled into a symmetry of disorder that charms the attention and fascinates the eye. It is a soft and delicious air wherein I sit. A torrid drowse is in the receding landscape. The people move leisurely, as befits the world where there is no preparation for frost and no urgent need of laborious apparel. There are tardy bullock-carts, unconscious donkeys, and men pushing vehicles. There are odd products and unaccustomed cakes and cookies on little stands by the roadside, where the turbaned vendor sits on the ground unconcernedly. Book Description
Excerpt from Songs of the Apple Tree, With Kith and Kin Of all the fruits with which prodigal nature has blessed mankind, there is none that has entered so intimately into every-day life as the Apple. Surely, then, the poetical side Of this old friend, so beautifully and lovingly sung in almost every tongue, brings its own welcome. We heartily thank 'both author and publisher for the permission granted us to reproduce copyrighted poems of the Apple family, and for the many warm letters of encouragement, and treasures unearthed from old scrap-books. If we have unwittingly trespassed upon the property and rights of others, we apologize and beg forgiveness, in the name of our mutual and lifelong friend, the Apple. Errors there are many, which we request you to correct, and to make any suggestion that may aid in drawing together overlooked, and to us unknown, poems in print on this branch of the family. To the spicy fruit now filling your bins and cellars we add the story of harvest, press, cider, and still, and hope, as the seasons come and go, to send forth the songs of blossom, tree.
