Book Description
We need water. It is just as important for us as air. This is why we frequently live on the shores of the Ux on rafts or in houses on stilts; we live from catching fish or diving for pearls. We are the Bnaur-Dux – people who breathe water. In fact this description is not completely accurate, for we can no more breathe water than other people can. Something in our blood and the fat cells in our skin is different however and can store oxygen. So far no-one has been able to explain it properly to me. At any rate, we very seldom suffer from incidents of suffocation or run the risk of drowning. But we are not invincible in the depths of the river. The water can kill us if we are not careful. But there are some of us who are able to do much more. They have a rare gift. No-one speaks of it – unless in a whisper. It is almost like a great secret. Those who are blessed with this gift are the Ztaa-Samro – the fire swimmers. Only our men inherit this gift. There has never been a female Bnaur who has made the water sing. But it happens with me. And I am not a man! My name is Noeg. I was named after the pink blossoms of the water clover that grows in the endless meadows near the banks of the Ux and bobs up and down with each wave. I am a pearl diver. I never wanted to be anything else. But everything has changed. This is my story.

Blazing Hot Cowboy
Author: Kim Redford
Publisher: Sourcebooks, Inc.
ISBN: 149262151X
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 259
Book Description
What's a guy to do when the one who got away returns home with a big surprise in tow... I thought I had everything I could ever want. After all, half the women in my small town call me "cowboy hot," and the other half ask me regularly if I can help them put out the fire in their pants. A guy could do worse. But there's only one problem...they're not who I want. The woman of my dreams walked away from Wildcat Bluff right after she broke my heart, and I never thought I'd seen her again. But I guess I was due for a second chance, because now Lauren Sheridan is back, and she's not alone. She's got her spunky daughter with her and a dead husband she's mourning. I want to be a friend to her, but being around her again has got me all upside down. And when the old spark between us starts to really burn, we're both going to have to reconcile the mistakes of our past if we want to earn a future together... Praise for A Cowboy Firefighter for Christmas: "Vividly written firefighting scenes, a rich cast of characters, and folksy charm...will keep you warm and toasty and entertained in a big—and I mean Texas big—way." —USA Today Happy Ever After "This tale will melt even the iciest heart."—Publishers Weekly STARRED Review

Monster of Metelaze
Author: E.C. Tubb
Publisher: Gateway
ISBN: 0575107758
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 99
Book Description
"Destiny awaits the world of Metelaze. Mighty will be our future. To us will come the races of the galaxy. To us will come the wealth of a universe. "Too long have we rested beneath the Terran heel. Very soon now we shall strike off the chains of our oppressors. Metelaze shall be free!" This sort of propaganda was always common among the demagogues of backward planets that had received help from Terra. But Metelaze was different. For there the promise held out was that secrets of the ancient pre-galactic science were becoming available, that an offer was being made that "could not be refused." To Cap Kennedy fell the task of finding out. Were there really unknown scientific marvels available on Metelaze? Who was behind these offers of total power and absolute wealth? What, in fact, was the monster of Metelaze? And how could such a monster out of time and space be stopped?

Kaiten
Author: Michael Mair
Publisher: Penguin Group
ISBN: 0425272702
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 385
Book Description
In November 1944, the U.S. Navy fleet lay at anchor deep in the Pacific Ocean, when the oiler USS Mississinewa exploded. Japan’s secret weapon, the Kaiten—a manned suicide submarine—had succeeded in its first mission. The Kaiten was so secret that even Japanese naval commanders didn’t know of its existence. And the Americans kept it secret as well. Embarrassed by the attack, the U.S. Navy refused to salvage the sunken Mighty Miss. Not until 2001, when a diving team located the wreck, would survivors learn what really happened. In Kaiten, Michael Mair and Joy Waldron tell the full story, from newly revealed secrets of the Kaiten development and training schools to gripping firsthand accounts of U.S. Navy survivors in the wake of the attack, as well as the harrowing recovery efforts that came later. INCLUDES PHOTOGRAPHS
