Book Description
Configuring Romanticism focuses on the ways in which “Romanticism” continues to change shape in light of new discoveries, new readings, new approaches. To this end, some essays here gathered offer novel interpretations of Romantic “classics” such as Wordsworth, Blake, and Southey, or discuss the Celtic roots of Romanticism. Others address the relationship of Romantic literature, particularly the work of Scott, Shelley, and De Quincey, to issues of colonialism and imperialism. Yet others trace the “afterlife” of Romanticism and the Romantics, specifically Byron, Shelley, and Keats, in the writings of Leigh Hunt, Elizabeth Gaskell, James Thomson, Algernon Swinburne, William Michael Rosetti, James Clarence Mangan, Francis Parkman, Gilbert and Sullivan, and T.S. Eliot, as well as in Dutch nineteenth-century criticism. The volume closes with discussions of the Romantic aspects of World War II propaganda, twentieth-century translations of the Aeneid in view of Romantic principles, the Romantic face of recent Québecois fiction, and present-day film versions of Jane Austen’s Emma.

Book Description
Blake Books Supplement is a continuation of Blake Books (1977), a bibliographical record of publications covering all aspects of William Blake's life and work - his writings, drawings, and engravings - and works of criticism on them. Most of the information in the Supplement was published inthe period 1972-1992, but there are items newly recorded here which appeared as early as the 1790s. The mass of new material is enormous - the last 20 years have produced almost as many items for inclusion as the preceding 200 years covered in the original Blake Books. Some of the most important discoveries concern newly identified writings and engravings by Blake himself. The work is organizedlike Blake Books, enabling the two volumes to be used side by side.

Book Description
This study traces the links between William Blake's ideas and radical Christian cultures in late eighteenth-century England. Drawing on a significant number of historical sources, Robert W. Rix examines how Blake and his contemporaries re-appropriated the sources they read within new cultural and political frameworks. By unravelling their strategies, the book opens up a new perspective on what has often been seen as Blake's individual and idiosyncratic ideas. We are also presented with the first comprehensive study of Blake's reception of Swedenborgianism. At the time Blake took an interest in Emanuel Swedenborg, the mystical and spiritual writings of the theosophist had become a platform for radical and revolutionary politics, as well as numerous heterodox practices, among his followers in England. Rix focuses on Swedenborgianism as a concrete and identifiable sub-culture from which a number of essential themes in Blake's works are reassessed. This book will appeal not only to Blake scholars, but to anyone studying the radical and sub- culture, religious, intellectual and cultural history of this period.

Book Description
"Gerda Norvig has written a book on Blake's Bunyan illustrations that is much more than that: it revises our sense of Blake, of the relationship of illustrator to illustrated text, and the assumptions of Romantic and Romanticist writing. Blake, certainly, will not be the same after Norvig's vigorous analysis, and it is arguable that the same may be true of Romanticism."--Ronald Paulson, author of "Figure and Abstraction in Contemporary Painting" "Specialists in both Blake studies and English Romanticism will find this book extremely interesting and useful. Norvig carefully analyzes for the first time a set of Blake's most accomplished illustrations, a set that (as she points out) has very rarely been reproduced or exhibited. These designs certainly deserve to be better known, and Norvig's insightful and stimulating interpretation of them makes their importance to Blake's thought and career amply clear. This is certainly a book that all Blake specialists will have to know."--Anne K. Mellor, author of "Mary Shelley: Her Life, Her Fiction, Her Monsters"
