The world's nearly 7,000 species of crabs are immediately recognizable by their claws, sideways movement, stalked eyes, and thick outer shells. These common crustaceans are found internationally, thriving in various habitats from the edge of the sea to the depths of the ocean, in fresh water or on land. Sexual Biology and Reproduction in Crustaceans covers crustacean reproduction as it deals with the structural morphology of the gamete-producing primary sex organs, such as the testis and ovary, the formation and maturation of gametes, their fusion during fertilization, and embryonic development that lead to the release of larvae. During the vast stretches of early geologic time, the islands of the Caribbean archipelago separated from continental land masses, rose and sank many times, merged with and broke from other land masses, and then by the mid-Cenozoic period settled into the current pattern known today. By the time Native Americans arrived, the islands had developed complex, stable ecosystems. The actions these first colonists took on the landscape—timber clearing, cultivation, animal hunting and domestication, fishing and exploitation of reef species—affected fragile land and sea biotic communities in both beneficial and harmful ways. On Land and Sea examines the condition of biosystems on Caribbean islands at the time of colonization, human interactions with those systems through time, and the current state of biological resources in the West Indies. Drawing on a massive data set collected from long-term archaeological research, the study reconstructs past lifeways on these small tropical islands. Crabs are part of the basic components of the ecosystem and they are consumed as food in many countries. Over 100 species of crabs are known worldwide with nine species common in West African countries especially Nigeria. Crabs are decapods crustaceans which have a very short tail and are covered with a thick shell, or exoskeleton and are armed with a single pair of claws. There are over 6,793 species of crab spread across the oceans, fresh water, and even on land. Among the species are the land crab, the big fisted swim crab (callinectes amnicola), and (callinectes latmanus). These 3 species are edible ones.Crabs mostly occur at the mouth of estuaries and along the course of many main rivers. Crabs which are the basic components of the ecosystem are the most advanced members of the phylum Arthropoda. The freshwater crabs of Nigeria are true crabs which can be distinguished from false crabs by not having 5 pairs of the pereiopods totally or partly concealed beneath the carapace, the antennae were always placed between the inner margin of orbit and fused Pterygostomial region with endotome. True crabs belong to the Suborder Brachyura of order Decapoda under Class Crustacea. It shows the greatest size range of all arthropods such as observed in lobsters, prawns, crayfishes, shrimps, hermit crab and true crabs.

This volume is in honour of Danièle Guinot (Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris, France), and was born out of our admiration for Danièle s immense contributions to her discipline. She has helped reawaken interest on the systematics of brachyuran decapods crustaceans, the true crabs. Furthermore, she has significantly helped to redefine the study of the complete evolutionary process in crabs. A total of 35 of her colleagues have contributed to this volume, submitting papers on those aspects of the Brachyura to which Danièle, herself, has significantly contributed taxonomy, evolution, morphology, palaeontology and general biology of crabs. This volume is but a small tribute to a highly respected colleague and friend from the active band of researchers that she has helped so much over the years.
