Excerpt from Biological Lectures: Delivered at the Marine Biological Laboratory of Wood's Holl, 1896-1897 IN the preface to the second volume of these Lectures it is stated that one of the leading objects of the course is to bring forward the unsettled problems of the day, and to discuss them freely. The question of the adequacy of natural selec tion is one that at the present time still divides two schools of speculative biology, and is a question that can be solved only by those inductive methods which it is the function of a Biological Laboratory to suggest, adopt, and execute. The principle of Panmixia, or the suspension of the pre serving influence of natural selection, has formed an integral part of the speculative writings of Weismann, and, as part of his theory of the continuity of the germ-plasm, is presumed to explain adequately the reduction of useless organs, and the occurrence, especially among domesticated animals, of the greater number of those variations which are usually attributed to the direct influence of the external conditions of life. Excerpt from Biological Lectures Delivered at the Marine Biological Laboratory of Wood's Holl in the Summer Session of 1893 IN offering the second volume of these lectures,1 it may be well to remind the reader who may not be acquainted with the Laboratory, that only one side of our work is here represented. Such a series of lectures on special problems in biology is offered every summer; but the main body of our lectures is of quite a different type, having direct reference to the instruction going on in the laboratories. As a rule, these special lectures are given by investigators, who undertake not only to review the field, but also to set fort/z t/ze results of t/zez'r own work. While these lectures may show the general drift of the authors' investigations, they cannot, of course, be ex pected to give a complete account of the facts on which the conclusions are based. In lectures of this kind due allowance must be made for the authors' limitations in time, as the sub ject is often one which would require a dozen or more lectures for its complete elaboration. Somewhat greater freedom in the expression of Opinion than might be expected in strictly scientific communications, must also be permitted. In fact, it is one of the leading objects of this course of lectures to bring forward the unsettled problems of the day, and to discuss them freely. It is to be expected, of course, that now and then Opposed stand points will be developed, as has happened this time; but these differences exist, and will continue to exist, as long as anything remains for investigation, and the scientific reader will not be surprised to find them here. It may be hardly necessary to add that the authors are severally responsible for the method and form of their lectures. Excerpt from Biological Lectures: From the Marine Biological Laboratory of Woods Holl, 1899 The questions relating to the origin of organic structures must always possess great interest for the biologist, and when I was asked to speak before the students at Woods Holl, it seemed to me that a discussion of recent views bearing on the development of the spore-producing structures of the higher plants, i.e., the Archegoniates and seed-bearing plants, would not be inappropriate. There is good reason to suppose that among plants, as among animals, the most primitive forms were aquatic; and it is highly probable that many existing fresh-water algæ are but slightly modified descendants of these ancestral types. This is evinced by the great uniformity shown by existing green algæ all over the world. Most genera and many species are cosmopolitan, and they exhibit far less variety than is shown by their larger and more specialized marine relations. Presumably the conditions in fresh water have changed but little, and as the more specialized forms have taken to the land, or have developed in the sea, the few that remained in their primitive environment have been subjected to much less competition, and have probably persisted with but little change from very remote times. Leaving aside certain forms of doubtful affinities, like the bacteria and blue-green algæ, the existing forms which represent most nearly the ancestors of the higher plants are the Volvocineæ and Protococcaceæ.
