Book Description
This penetrating case study of institution building and entrepreneurship in science shows how a minor medical speciality evolved into a large and powerful academic discipline. Drawing extensively on little-used archival sources, the author analyses in detail how biomedical science became a central part of medical training and practice. The book shows how biochemistry was defined as a distinct discipline by the programmatic vision of individual biochemists and of patrons and competitors in related disciplines. It shows how discipline builders used research programmes as strategies that they adapted to the opportunities offered by changing educational markets and national medical reform movements in the United States, Britain and Germany. The author argues that the priorities and styles of various departments and schools of biochemistry reflect systematic social relationships between that discipline and biology, chemistry and medicine. Science is shaped by its service roles in particular local contexts: This is the central theme. The author's view of the political economy of modern science will be of interest to historians and social scientists, scientific and medical practitioners, and anyone interested in the ecology of knowledge in scientific institutions and professions.

Book Description
Eukaryotic cells contain a plurality of organelles distinguished by their specific membranes and contents. Their biogenesis occurs by growth and division of preexisting structures rather than de novo. Mitochondria and chloroplasts, which appear to be descended from prokaryotic ancestors, have retained some DNA and the biosynthetic capability for its expression. They synthesize, however, only a few of their proteins themselves. Most of their proteins are synthesized on free ribosomes in the cytoplasm and are only assembled in the correct membrane after synthesis is complete. The biogenesis of peroxisomes and glyoxysomes also appears to occur by an incorporation of proteins synthesized first in the cytoplasm. Other organelles, the Golgi complex, lysosomes, secretory vesicles, and the plasma membrane, are formed in a different manner. Their proteins are assembled in the membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum during trans lation by bound ribosomes and they must then be transported to the correct membrane. The 1980 Mosbach Colloquium was one of the first attempts to discuss the biogenesis of the various organelles in biochemical terms. This was appropriate since the crucial problems now center on the search for signals and receptors that dictate the site of assembly, the route taken, and the final location of a particular organelle protein. The assembly of prokaryotic membranes and the membrane of an animal virus were also discussed, since these simpler systems might shed light on the biogenesis of organelles in eukaryotes.

Book Description
The origin and early years of any rapidly changing scientific discipline runs the risk of being forgotten unless a record of its past is preserved. In this, the first book-length history of clinical chemistry, those involved or interested in the field will read about who and what went before them and how the profession came to its present state of clinical importance. The narrative reconstructs the origins of clinical chemistry in the seventeenth century and traces its often obscure path of development in the shadow of organic chemistry, physiology and biochemistry until it assumes its own identity at the beginning of the twentieth century. The chronological development of the story reveals the varied roots from which modern clinical chemistry arose.
