Deux voies ont été développées pour valoriser les boues : - la démétalisation par action d'agents complexants - la conversion en produits valorisables, notamment en combustibles. Dans la première partie, nous avons défini les critères objectifs permettant de décider avec sécurité pour l'environnement quelles sont les boues des stations d'épuration aptes à être utilisées par l'agriculture. Actuellement, les boues des stations d'épuration comportent des proportions majoritaires de particules colloïdales, minérales et organiques retenant d'importantes quantités de métaux lourds toxiques (Zn, Pb, Cu, Hg). Le travail entrepris avait pour but de libérer les métaux lourds fixes sur la gangue minérale et organique de manière à rendre la boue utilisable en agriculture. Nous avons mis en évidence qu'une mobilisation de métaux nécessitait des concentrations élevées en extractants minéraux ou organiques. Le rôle joue par le pH des suspensions est également important car l'acidité ou la basicité du milieu peuvent à elles seules libérer les métaux des carbonates et sulfures, et détruire certains complexes organiques. Dans la seconde partie, nous avons procédé à la conversion de la boue en produits valorisables (gaz, huile, charbon) par pyrolyse sous pression de vapeur d'eau. Nous avons en particulier examiné l'efficacité de divers catalyseurs (carbonates, argiles). Les paramètres opératoires, favorables à un rendement important en huile et gaz, ont été déterminés
