Book Description
Author's Preface: The title, Bay City Logbook, suggest several historical themes that are interwoven within Bay City's past. Indeed a "Logbook" is a record of events most commonly associated with a ship or aircraft. From that perspective, the community's ship-building industry, its fishing lore, and its pioneers in aviation legitimize the title choice. More recognizable, though, is the reality that little progress would have taken place had it not been for the city's original dependence on logs and lumber. The lumber boom of the second half of the nineteenth century initiated the development of a complex urban society. Economic guideposts put in place during the lumber era also directed the city along the twentieth-century highway that continues the community's industrial journey. A "Logbook," in the broadest sense of the meaning is "a record of progress of a journey or an experiment". This defines Bay City's past well, and gives direction to an illustrated history that traces both the pathways to progress and the innovation that characterized Bay City's heritage. These are the themes that direct Bay City's past and should be noted as one looks through this illustrated history. By combining text, remembrances, and narrative with photographs, the reader can grasp the legacy of Bay City's enduring past. It is a journey marked by persistence and durability. Bay City Logbook should encourage everyone to study the community's past as an indispensable resource to plan for the future

Book Description
In 1757, a sailing ship owned by an affluent Connecticut merchant sailed from New London to the tiny island of Bence in Sierra Leone, West Africa, to take on fresh water and slaves. On board was the owner's son, on a training voyage to learn the trade. The Logbooks explores that voyage, and two others documented by that young man, to unearth new realities of Connecticut's slave trade and question how we could have forgotten this part of our past so completely. When writer Anne Farrow discovered the significance of the logbooks for the Africa and two other ships in 2004, her mother had been recently diagnosed with dementia. As Farrow bore witness to the impact of memory loss on her mother's sense of self, she also began a journey into the world of the logbooks and the Atlantic slave trade, eventually retracing part of the Africa's long-ago voyage to Sierra Leone. As the narrative unfolds in The Logbooks, Farrow explores the idea that if our history is incomplete, then collectively we have forgotten who we are—a loss that is in some ways similar to what her mother experienced. Her meditations are well rounded with references to the work of writers, historians, and psychologists. Forthright, well researched, and warmly recounted, Farrow's writing is that of a novelist's, with an eye for detail. Using a wealth of primary sources, she paints a vivid picture of the eighteenth-century Connecticut slavers. The multiple narratives combine in surprising and effective ways to make this an intimate confrontation with the past, and a powerful meditation on how slavery still affects us. Book Description
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Edward Snowden, the man who risked everything to expose the US government’s system of mass surveillance, reveals for the first time the story of his life, including how he helped to build that system and what motivated him to try to bring it down. In 2013, twenty-nine-year-old Edward Snowden shocked the world when he broke with the American intelligence establishment and revealed that the United States government was secretly pursuing the means to collect every single phone call, text message, and email. The result would be an unprecedented system of mass surveillance with the ability to pry into the private lives of every person on earth. Six years later, Snowden reveals for the very first time how he helped to build this system and why he was moved to expose it. Spanning the bucolic Beltway suburbs of his childhood and the clandestine CIA and NSA postings of his adulthood, Permanent Record is the extraordinary account of a bright young man who grew up online—a man who became a spy, a whistleblower, and, in exile, the Internet’s conscience. Written with wit, grace, passion, and an unflinching candor, Permanent Record is a crucial memoir of our digital age and destined to be a classic.

Book Description
John De Silva’s manuscript reads like a treatise on the power of faith in the presence of overwhelming odds. It is at once, inspiring and humbling, and wrings the gauntlet to call forth that which is best of each in every one of us. Mutiny, murder, and maritime disaster! Such are the makings of Captain John De Silva’s recollections of a life spent at sea. Throughout his first person account of the voyage, De Silva explores the exquisite miseries and vicissitudes of life on the unforgiving oceans of our planet. The long and tiresome journey begins in January 2006. Captain John De Silva assumes command of Cape Agulhas and a misanthropic crew. Before the ship has completed its circuitous route along the African coastline, however, De Silva must answer to everything from biblical infestations of cockroaches to engine failures, duplicity and deceit. Nearly every imaginable disaster that can occur on a seafaring vessel, will. Yet, the palpable tension of the narrative underscores the tenacity of the human spirit as it is tested by God and nature alike. Through optimism, faith and a relentless desire to make it back to his family, De Silva guides the vessel through one hardship after another. CAPTAIN’S LOGBOOK offers a darkly humorous examination of man as he faces the best and the worst of his own kind. The colorful cast of characters includes barbarous sailors, corrupt port officials and a seasick cook with the culinary aptitude of a barnacle. All the characters portrayed in De Silva’s log book are real, but pseudonyms have been used to protect their identity.
