Lors des grandes sécheresses qui ont touché le Sahel, en 1983-1984, les populations du Gourma, au nord du Mali, ont été touchées par la famine. Toutefois, ces habitants du Sahel savent utiliser toutes les ressources de leur environnement pour faire face à des situations récurrentes de disette et de pénurie. En effet, Songhaï, Peuls et Touaregs dépendent de la végétation sauvage, aussi bien pour faire paître leurs troupeaux que pour leur propre alimentation. Dans cet environnement, marqué par une faible pluviométrie, variant de 100 à 400 mm par an, ils se répartissent les ressources naturelles aussi bien pour la nourriture que pour la pharmacopée et l'artisanat. Le savoir des populations en matière de plantes sauvages est très étendu et leur utilisation considérable. Mais la récolte et la préparation en restent longues et pénibles. Environ 37 espèces différentes de plantes alimentaires sont d'usage courant, sous forme de graines, de feuilles ou de fruits ; 60 espèces sont utilisées comme médicaments et 31 espèces sont mentionnées pour leurs usages pratiques (nattes, piquets de tente, ustensiles divers...). Ces végétaux sont résistants à la sécheresse et tolèrent en même temps une exploitation intensive pour le pâturage et les récoltes. Cet ouvrage est l'aboutissement d'une recherche pluridisciplinaire menée par une équipe composée d'anthropologues et de scientifiques, maliens et norvégiens. En effet le Parlement norvégien a financé cette recherche sur la sécheresse au Sahel, avec pour objectif de permettre aux ONG et aux populations de cette région d'améliorer leurs conditions de vie par la mise en valeur de ces ressources ainsi que leur gestion durable.

This document attempts to present the current state of knowledge on agroforestry parkland systems. These systems, which for many local populations are very important for food security, income generation and environmental protection, are found primarily in the semi-arid and sub-humid zones of West Africa. It also presents data on current trends in parkland development and assesses determining factors.
