Book Description
Like a modern-day Don Quixote, Joe Kurmaskie—bike adventurer, writer, and twelve-year-old boy trapped in a man’s body—wanders the world on two wheels, often with hilarious results, in Riding Outside the Lines. A jaunt through such far-flung locations as Ireland, Australia, Mexico, South America, and beyond, here is a collection of tales woven together with one central theme: the world is a much smaller place when you view it from the seat of a bicycle. Whether he’s weekending in the buff after accidentally stumbling into a nudist colony wedding, knocking back red wine in tin cans with a gun-toting ex–bounty hunter, combing the countryside in a quest to find the all-girl bagpipe squad he met in his dreams, or playing a rousing game of ice golf on the frozen tundra, Joe Kurmaskie writes of his gonzo global trek in a spirit infused with insight, good humor, and optimism. Riding Outside the Lines encourages travel buffs and armchair explorers alike to get on your bike and see the beauty of our planet and the colorful souls who populate it.

Book Description
As bicycle races go, the attractions of the Tour Divide are not immediately apparent. For a start, it is the longest mountain-bike race in the world, running nearly 3,000 miles down the Rockies from Canada to Mexico. But the distance is not the only challenge - the total ascent of 200,000 ft is the equivalent of scaling Mount Everest nearly seven times. Then there are the dangerous animals likely to be encountered on the route: grizzly bears, mountain lions and wolves, not to mention rattlesnakes and tarantulas. Worse, the rewards for all this effort are strictly limited. Unlike in the Tour de France, there is no fabled yellow jersey and no prize money. Yet, undaunted, and in spite of never having owned a mountain bike, Paul Howard signed up. Battling the worst weather for generations, drinking whiskey with a cowboy and singing karaoke with the locals, Howard's journey turned into more than just a race - it became the adventure of a lifetime.

Book Description
The Bicycle CowboyWhen you have sung all the songs you can remember, debated the world's problems, prayed about everything you can think of, well the truth is, hours on a bicycle turn into days and then weeks, and you begin to look for ways to entertain yourself. One beautiful morning while riding my bicycle between Mile City and Plevna Montana, I saw deer, antelope, horses and a lot of cattle. As I rode along I noticed herds of cattle gathered next to the fence that lined the road. The cattle always looked at me, during those cool early hours of the morning, as if I was supposed to do something for them. That's when I got the idea – They are waiting to be fed! Then I thought again – But wait! They have miles and miles of pasture grass and an abundance of water, why would they be waiting for someone to feed them. Another thought came to mind – Maybe they are curious about this person riding by on a bicycle. That was an 'aha' moment. They might think I'm on a horse. Maybe they think I'm there to herd them to another place. Then I got the idea – What if I could herd the cattle up the fence line as a cowboy would do on a horse. I began to whistle, holler, and shout: “Get up! Yaw!” Well lo and behold the cattle began to moo, move, and then run as I circled back behind the herd and then alongside until I was leading them over the hills, through gullies and streams until they came to a fence. I thanked them for the fun and continued riding while they stood there bewildered. That's when I decided I was – The Bicycle Cowboy; after all, how many other people have herded cattle on a bicycle?!

Book Description
“A modern day Mark Twain on two wheels.” —USA Today “Joe Kurmaskie rolls with a keen sense of humor and a big heart.” —Christopher Moore, author of Lamb, Fool, and The Serpent of Venice The fifth book in the Metal Cowboy series of bicycle-touring tales hits the open road in high gear and never looks back. Whether he’s outsprinting African elephants in Zimbabwe; reliving dangerous old cycling routes of his youth; debating the merits of living strong or living wrong or living without a rubber bracelet at all; riding up Mount Hood in a July snowstorm; savoring roadside treasures found along the way; extolling the wonder of boys on bikes; detailing a few skirmishes in the war between cars and bikes, debating the perils and delights of riding at night; and diagnosing whether the glorious addiction called cycling has taken over your life, he consistently rides down awful truths and celebrates beautiful wrecks—himself included. Joe Kurmaskie has mastered the painful art of falling down and the flat-out rush of getting back up again. This collection is a kaleidoscope of exuberant cycling adventure stories spanning four decades and thirty countries. It embraces the absurdity of living at any speed, the fragility in each of us the world over, and simple wonders waiting just up the road.
