Excerpt from Figures of Speech Used in the Bible: Explained and Illustrated All language is governed by law; but, in order to increase the power of a word, or the force of an expression, these laws are designedly departed from, and words and sentences are thrown into, and used in, new forms, or games. The ancient Greeks reduced these new and peculiar forms to science, and gave names to more than two hundred of them. Book Description
BASIC BIBLE INTERPRETATION Can the Bible really be understood? Are Old Testament prophecies relevant for today? How can I understand the symbolism of the Book of Revelation? What is the relationship of the Old Testament to the New Testament? Why study Bible interpretation? Dr. Roy Zuck points out that it is essential for understanding and teaching the Bible properly, essential as a step beyond observation, and essential for applying the Bible correctly. He discusses the challenges of Bible interpretation, considers the problems of Bible interpretation, explores the history of Bible interpretation, and defines key terms--all in a practical, down-to-earth way. Though Dr. Zuck's many years of teaching and scholarship are evident in this book, he has written in language understandable to all who are serious about bible study and who want to know better what Scripture means.

The One Great Requirement of the Word-"Rightly Dividing" It. The Meaning of Words to be Gathered from the Scope; not the Scope from the Words. The Scope of a Passage to be Gathered from its Structure. The Biblical Usage of Words Essential to their Correct Interpretation. The Context Always Essential to the Interpretation of Words. The First Occurrence of Words, Expressions, and Utterances Often Essential to their Interpretation. The Place Where a Passage Occurs is Often Essential to its Full Interpretation. Book Description
Compared with the effort to interpret Hosea 1-3, the final chapter has been rather neglected. Additionally, the variety of explanations of biblical images in Hos 14 indicates a necessity to clarify the methods of their interpretation. The metaphors and similes of Hos 14:2-9 referring to Yahweh, healing, loving dew, and tree, are investigated. They are interpreted on the background of their language conventions. Thereby the actual usage in Hosea with its twists, alterations, and reversals becomes obvious. The study demonstrates that Hosea's metaphors and similes are deeply rooted in Israelite language traditions. They are not to be interpreted as literal description of cultic experiences. All the metaphors for Yahweh in Hos 14 are traditionally connected with kingship. They are used in such a way that they express an eschatological hope with Yahweh as Israel's king, however, without downgrading Yahweh's radical judgment.
