Beyond Shelters
Author: James Hughes
Publisher: James Lorimer & Company
ISBN: 1459413555
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 258
Book Description
Newspapers, television and films cast homeless shelters as places of desperation, sadness and sickness. However, over the last 25 years, homeless shelters have changed dramatically. Shelters have become more professional and sophisticated in addressing homelessness in their communities. They now do much more than provide a bed and a meal for the night — they offer different methods of intervention, different types of services and different forms of connection to the communities they serve. This book offers essays by experienced shelter managers who address the future of the homeless shelter in Canada. This diverse collection also includes a chapter by Dr. Sam Tsemberis, the father of the successful Housing First Model. There are contributions by leaders in the homelessness field from across Canada, who have been at the forefront of developing unique services for women, youth, Indigenous people, and families. The days of shelters serving to merely warehouse homeless people out of sight and mind are being replaced by specialized approaches that are reducing homelessness in Canada. The contributors have years of experience understanding the causes of and solutions to homelessness and the role that shelters can play in achieving their ultimate goal — the elimination of all forms of homelessness in Canada.

Beyond the Wall

ISBN: 1541602587
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 489
Book Description
AN INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the ashes of the Second World War to the fall of the Berlin Wall, the definitive history of East Germany, "a fascinating, sparkling book, filled with insights" (Peter Frankopan) In 1990, a country disappeared. When the Iron Curtain fell, East Germany ceased to be. For over forty years, from the ruin of the Second World War to the cusp of a new millennium, the German Democratic Republic presented a radically different Germany than what had come before and what exists today. Socialist solidarity, secret police, central planning, barbed wire: this was a Germany forged on the fault lines of ideology and geopolitics. In Beyond the Wall, acclaimed historian Katja Hoyer sets aside the usual Cold War caricatures of the GDR to offer a kaleidoscopic new vision of this vanished country, revealing the rich political, social, and cultural landscape that existed amid oppression and hardship. Drawing on a vast array of never-before-seen interviews and documents, this is the definitive history of the other Germany, beyond the Wall.

An argument overheard. The Society’s secrets exposed. It’s time to test the walls. Rush has her reasons for exploring every nook and cranny in Aeon Castle in her spare moments. Sure, it makes her new friends testy, but she can handle that. She’s more worried about the ticking time bombs hidden in her tower room upstairs. What she can’t handle is Samuel’s prying. He thinks because they’re both from Bedrock he knows her. But he can’t guess the first thing about her, and she never invited the nosy, insufferable man-child to meddle. Rush has a secret. Samuel has spent the last several months trying to ferret out what she’s hiding. He doesn’t want her to get hurt living up to her nickname. He’d offer help if she’d let him get a word in edgewise. If she’d answer a question or two about what brought her to Aeon. But Rush doesn’t want his help. And she’s not interested in playing by Aeon Society rules. When he finds her outside the walls, and with the Adepts after her no less, he’s done asking permission. Whatever she’s up to, he’s honor bound to protect her. Beyond Shelter after Disaster: Practice, Process and Possibilities
Author: David Sanderson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317976975
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 171
Book Description
Providing shelter after a disaster is recognised as one of the most complex areas of humanitarian relief and recovery. Some aid agencies have stopped providing shelter altogether after bad experiences, while those that do quickly become engaged in challenges that go far beyond the provision of structures alone. Yet with the number and severity of disasters set to increase, due to climate change and rapid urban growth, the need for approaches that work has never been greater. This book explores the issues in three parts. The first, Practice, looks at lessons from past efforts. Part two, Process, proposes practical and effective people-centred approaches. Part three considers currently neglected issues such as disability, human rights and urban-oriented approaches. Through practical case studies and academic research, Beyond Shelter after Disaster critiques past methods and explores future options for improving practice in one of the most complex areas of post disaster relief and recovery. This book was originally published as a special issue in Environmental Hazards: Human and Policy Dimensions.
