Book Description
This book addresses issues of space, historicity, architecture and textuality by focusing on Singapore's singular position in the region and as a global city. The articles consider how various experiences of Singapore, both from within and from outside, help to complicate existing assumptions about global urbanism, postcolonialism, and architectural theory while producing challenging new ideas from a variety of disciplines concerned with how space, historicity, architecture and textuality inform one another.

Book Description
Beyond Description brings anthropologists and other social scientists together to examine the problem of explanation. What is "an explanation?" What can it add? What makes it authoritative, clarifying, or misleading? Whom does it serve and how is it produced? These questions lie at the heart of recent public crises of confidence in expertise, political representation, and classic liberal visions of whom we can rely on for true and trustworthy accounts. In a world beset by events and processes that seem to defy expert predictions of their impossibility, and in which post-hoc accounts can often feel more like rationalizations than explanations, competing voices vie for public presence and seek to silence one another. Anthropology and the social sciences face such questions too, making contemporary explanatory practice both an empirical and a reflexive challenge. By combining ethnographic studies of practices of explanation in a range of contemporary political, medical, artistic, religious, and bureaucratic settings, the essays in Beyond Description offer critical examinations of changing norms and forms of explanation in the world and within anthropology itself.

Book Description
“What cannot be said above all must not be silenced but written.” -Jacques Derrida, the late, great writer who created deconstructionism. No one will ever silence my creative voice again, even if there's no end of people who would gladly celebrate my death, just because I let my purple bird fly. Without shining my reason upon this bleak wasteland, I’d have no book to share, and our hateful world would have successfully murdered me. So I’ll live Joyously even if that means my death, but I’ll never die before my soul strikes back. This is my postmodern tribute to Proverbs and exists as an online memoir written to thousands of LGBTQ+ people reacting to each moment. None of their names are mentioned, and few if any of their words are quoted. This novella is the result. This book is a postmodern art display in text form. The mood and flow change throughout to indicate some of what goes unsaid. There is a transgender symbol next to each micro story as a symbol of peaceful protest against intolerance. An entry in the Soul in Words book series: The Soul in Words novella series is an eclectic memoir of thousands of micro stories. It is literary journalism. It is philosophy, spirituality, and science. It is empowerment, a gender transition, and travel. It is hope, love, and joy in the face of individuation from her origin... A three-year journey by Emily Tiffany Joy. From the author: My Writing Process and Why I Write My writing process is organic. I often like to engage in stream of consciousness writing. It is often hard to tell when I do this because I draft, edit, and proof so much that the results look quite discernibly planned. I grapple with intention often. I avoid intending in the chaos of the creative process. Then I determine what I intended from the results in the editing and proofing process. So much of what I write is from my soul and from my direct experiences in life. I am a nonfiction writer with a background in the study of oral history. I am unsatisfied until what I have written reads like real literature. I often only place a fraction of what I write into my books. That is how I reach the highest possible quality of expression for my readers. Every reader of my work is an honor to me. That someone devotes hours to learning about my life is the highest compliment. Thanks to everyone who has read my books and to all who read them in the future. You are why I write and who my books set out to empower. You deserve the best life. You deserve a wonderful future lined with happiness and love.

Book Description
Some people call me crazy. Some think Im weird, and others believe I am out downright out of this world. Sometimes to others I make no sense, but in my heart and mind it all comes together. I am made up of a mixture of different things; some that may not necessarily mix, but live flamboyantly in me. Ive had a crazy life and that should be no secret to anyone anymore. I have experienced things beyond the belief of sorrow and agony. Only I know what it is like to feel what I feel. Only I know the gravity of the experiences I have overcome. I guess it really is just how it is stated in the Bible. God will never allow more to come to us than what we can bear, and I know I can do whatever I need to do, through Jesus Christ, whom strengthens me. So, before you judge this book by its cover or dare to belittle my journey, walk a mile in my shoes. I hope my story inspires you with love, life and courage.

Book Description
In 1905, Bertrand Russell published 'On Denoting' in which he proposed and defended a quantificational account of definite descriptions. Forty-five years later, in 'On Referring', Peter Strawson claimed that Russell was mistaken: definite descriptions do not function as quantifiers but (paradigmatically) as referring expressions. Ever since, scores of theorists have attempted to adjudicate this debate. Others have gone beyond the question of the proper analysis of definite descriptions, focusing instead on the complex relations between definites, indefinites, and pronouns. These relations are often examined with attention to the phenomena of scope and anaphora. This collection assembles nineteen new papers on definite descriptions and related topics. The contributors include both philosophers and linguists, many of whom have been active participants in the various debates concerning descriptions. The volume contains a brief general introduction and is divided into six sections, each of which is accompanied by a detailed introduction of its own. Several of the sections concern issues associated with the Russell/Strawson debate. These include the sections on incomplete descriptions, the referential/attributive distinction, and presupposition and truth value gaps. There is also a section on the representation of definites and indefinites in semantic theory, containing papers that reject certain core assumptions of the Russellian paradigm. Linguists interested in definites have traditionally been concerned with how such expressions interact with other expressions, including pronouns and indefinites. They have explored, and continue to explore, these interactions through the complex phenomena of scope and anaphora. In the section dealing with anaphoric pronouns and descriptions, indefinites and dynamic syntax/semantics, five linguists propose and defend their views on these and related issues. Finally, there is a section that concerns the relation between proper names and descriptions and, more particularly, the idea that some names, those introduced into the language by description, are semantically equivalent to definite descriptions.

Book Description
Essays from the New York Times–bestselling author who inspired the film The Glorias, a “woman who has told the truth about her life and ours” (Los Angeles Times). With cool humor and rich intellect, Gloria Steinem strips bare our social constructions of gender and race, explaining just how limiting these invented cultural identities can be. In the first of six sections, Steinem imagines how our understanding of human psychology would be different in a witty reversal: What if Freud had been a woman who inflicted biological inferiority on men (think “womb envy”)? In other essays, she presents positive examples of people who turn gendered stereotypes on their heads, from a female bodybuilder to Mahatma Gandhi, whose followers absorbed his wisdom that change starts at the bottom. And in some of the most moving pieces, Steinem reveals some of her own complicated history as a writer, woman, and citizen of the world. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Gloria Steinem including rare images from the author’s personal collection.
