Book Description
The present volume represents the Proceedings of an International Research Seminar organized in 1963 by the Statistical Laboratory, Uni versity of California, Berkeley, on the occasion of a remarkable triple anniversary: the 250th anniversary of jACOB BERNOULLI's "Ars Conjectandi", the 200th anniversary of THOMAS BAYES' "Essay towards solving a problem in doctrine of chance", and the!50th anniversary of the PIERRE-SIMON DE LAPLACE's "Essai philosophique sur les probabilites". Financial assistance of the National Science Foundation, without which the Seminar could not have been held, is gratefully acknowledged. The publication of Ars Conjectandi, in 1713, was a milestone in the history of probability theory. Here, for the first time, appeared a careful description of the now well-known combinatorial methods which give solutions of many problems on simple games of chance. Also, Ars Conjectandi contains the Bernoulli numbers, theorems relating to the duration of games, and to the ruin of gamblers and, above all, the state ment and proof of the famous Bernoulli weak law of large numbers. Even though the original Latin edition of Ars Conjectandi was followed by several in modern languages, currently the book is not easily accessible. Apparently the last re-publication, in German, occurred in 1899, in two issues, No. 107 and No. 108, of the series "Ostwald's Klassi ker der exakten Wissenschaften", Wilhelm Engelman, Leipzig. The two books are difficult to locate

Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 691
Book Description
This is a history of the use of Bayes theoremfrom its discovery by Thomas Bayes to the rise of the statistical competitors in the first part of the twentieth century. The book focuses particularly on the development of one of the fundamental aspects of Bayesian statistics, and in this new edition readers will find new sections on contributors to the theory. In addition, this edition includes amplified discussion of relevant work.

Steps Towards a Unified Basis for Scientific Models and Methods
Author: Inge S. Helland
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814280860
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 276
Book Description
Culture, in fact, also plays an important role in science which is, per se, a multitude of different cultures. The book attempts to build a bridge across three cultures: mathematical statistics, quantum theory and chemometrical methods. Of course, these three domains should not be taken as equals in any sense. But the book holds the important claim that it is possible to develop a common language which, at least to a certain extent, can create direct links and build bridges. From this point of departure, the book will be of interest to the following three types of scientists OCo statisticians, quantum physicists and chemometricians OCo and in particular, statisticians and physicists who are interested in interdisciplinary research. Written at a level that is accessible to general readers, not only the academics, the book will appeal to graduate students and mathematically educated persons of all disciplines as well as philosophers, pure and applied mathematicians, and the general public. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: The Basic Elements (1,433 KB). Contents: The Basic Elements; Statistical Theory and Practice; Statistical Inference Under Symmetry; The Transition from Statistics to Quantum Theory; Quantum Mechanics from a Statistical Basis; Further Development of Quantum Mechanics; Decisions in Statistics; Multivariate Data Analysis and Statistics; Quantum Mechanics and the Diversity of Concepts. Readership: Graduate students and researchers in the field of statistics and mathematical physics."

Classical Probability in the Enlightenment, New Edition
Author: Lorraine Daston
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691248516
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 456
Book Description
An award-winning history of the Enlightenment quest to devise a mathematical model of rationality What did it mean to be reasonable in the Age of Reason? Enlightenment mathematicians such as Blaise Pascal, Jakob Bernoulli, and Pierre Simon Laplace sought to answer this question, laboring over a theory of rational decision, action, and belief under conditions of uncertainty. Lorraine Daston brings to life their debates and philosophical arguments, charting the development and application of probability theory by some of the greatest thinkers of the age. Now with an incisive new preface, Classical Probability in the Enlightenment traces the emergence of new kind of mathematics designed to turn good sense into a reasonable calculus.

Essays in the History of Mathematics
Author: Arthur Schlissel
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821822985
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 81
Book Description
"The papers in this volume represent the talks given at the special session on the history of mathematics held at the annual meeting of the American Mathematical Society, San Francisco, California, January 7-11, 1981. The invited speakers were researchers of mathematics who spoke about some historical aspect of their particular area of interest. Thus, the presented papers were views of subjects through the eyes of those who helped shape, develop, contribute to them."--Introduction.
