Book Description
Beethoven's Violin Concerto was the only significant work of this genre to appear between Mozart's five concertos of 1775 and Mendelssohn's E minor Concerto of 1844. This handbook explores the background to Beethoven's work, its genesis, its place in the composer's oeuvre and the influences which combined in its creation. It describes contemporary reactions to the work both in the musical press and in the concert hall during its first crucial years, and explains how it was eventually accepted into the repertory, spawning numerous recordings and editions. The principal sources and many of the work's textual problems are considered, including discussion of the composer's version for piano and orchestra, Op. 61a. A detailed account of the work itself is followed by a review of the wide variety of cadenzas that have been written to complement the concerto through its performance history.

Beethoven - Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61: 2-CD Set

Publisher:
ISBN: 9781596151468
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 19
Book Description
(Music Minus One). Performed by Geoffrey Applegate, violin Accompaniment: Stuttgart Symphony Orchestra Conductor: Emil Kahn Beethoven composed this work, his only violin concerto, in 1806, in the same year that he composed the Symphony No. 5, the Rasoumowsky Quartets, and the Piano Concerto No. 4. It was dedicated to Franz Clement, who at its premiere separated the first movement from the second and third movements and fiddled some of his own works in between, with the violin turned upside-down! We can assume that Beethoven never spoke to him again. And needless to say the world took this concerto to its heart, as it has never left the repertoire. A magnificent piece. Contains a printed score and two compact discs featuring the concerto with soloist in digitally remastered stereo; then again in a digital stereo accompaniment version minus the solo violin part.

Bending the Rules of Music Theory
Author: Timothy Cutler
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351069152
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 314
Book Description
For students learning the principles of music theory, it can often seem as though the tradition of tonal harmony is governed by immutable rules that define which chords, tones, and intervals can be used where. Yet even within the classical canon, there are innumerable examples of composers diverging from these foundational "rules." Drawing on examples from composers including J.S. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Brahms, and more, Bending the Rules of Music Theory seeks to take readers beyond the basics of music theory and help them to understand the inherent flexibility in the system of tonal music. Chapters explore the use of different rule-breaking elements in practice and why they work, introducing students to a more nuanced understanding of music theory.

PLAYING THE PATHWAYS OF MY BRAIN
Author: Olga Bobrovnikova
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1491892730
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 237
Book Description
Being constantly criticised for excessive emotion and movement by her piano professors, Olga Bobrovnikova took inspiration and a new attitude to performance when she heard the recordings made in the 1890s of a forgotten pianist, Paul Pabst, who Tchaikovsky has called “a pianist blessed by God”. Her diagnosis of MS coincided with her discovery of Pabst and his music, and in her typically defiant way, she set out to record Pabst’s exceptionally difficult piano paraphrases of Tchaikovsky operas as well as a trio that has been dedicated to Anton Rubinstein and also to make the first ever recording of Pabst’s own piano concerto. Her research into Pabst was like a backdoor into the secrets of Russian musical history, which led to Olga’s novel The Diaries of Alexandra Petrovna. She was drawn by the circumstances and their relationship to the conclusion that Pabst’s was the hidden hand that Tchaikovsky admitted he needed to help with the passages of his “Piano Concerto No. 1”. Her immersion in this lost history of the Russian Piano School revealed major differences in and controversy regarding the style of piano performance as well as coinciding with a growing interest in the brain and music. A passion for pleasure in performance and a study of the neurology of her MS-damaged brain created this unique book, which is a fusion of fascinating musical history, a wide review of scientific research, and detail of a new performance method. Professor Cyril Hoschl: “The book is really impressive!”
