Book Description
Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Beef Production (Classic Reprint)
Author: Herbert Windsor Mumford
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331954071
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 214
Book Description
Excerpt from Beef Production The magnitude and importance of the production of beef as a factor in American agriculture are not generally appreciated. The presentation of a book devoted solely to a discussion of the problems of the beef producer is an attempt to give adequate recognition to the industry. In "Beef Production" the attempt is made to present in the most direct manner certain facts of great economic importance to American beef producers. Much of the information given is based upon extensive feeding experiments conducted by the author at the Illinois Experiment Station. The arrangement of matter is designed to suit the demands both of the actual cattle feeder and of the student; to serve both as a ready reference guide - a text adapted to the progressive pedagogic presentation of the subject in the class-room and a treatise conveniently arranged in logical order for the general reader interested in the subject. The writer fully appreciates that the work is not as complete and comprehensive as it might be made; it is presented, however, with the thought that it will contribute to the literature, especially on the economic side, of beef production. It is hoped that it will serve to make beef production more profitable. The writer wishes to gratefully acknowledge the valuable suggestions and assistance given in the preparation of this book by his associate, Mr. L. D. Hall. Category : Business & Economics

Pages : 62
Book Description
Excerpt from Feeding Beef Cattle in Alabama In this connection I take the Opportunity again to point out the importance of these investigations not only to Alabama and other parts of the South but to the entire country as well. This work is laying the foundation for rational and profitable beef production under southern conditions and will grow in influence with the advance of the boll weevil and the eradication of the Texas-fever cattle tick. In this respect it will be worth far more to the South than the entire amount of the appropriation which makes it possible. Cattle Kingdom
Author: Christopher Knowlton
Publisher: HarperCollins
ISBN: 0544369971
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 469
Book Description
“The best all-around study of the American cowboy ever written. Every page crackles with keen analysis and vivid prose about the Old West. A must-read!” —Douglas Brinkley, The New York Times–bestselling author of The Wilderness Warrior: Theodore Roosevelt and the Crusade for America The open-range cattle era lasted barely a quarter century, but it left America irrevocably changed. Cattle Kingdom reveals how the West rose and fell, and how its legacy defines us today. The tale takes us from dust-choked cattle drives to the unlikely splendors of boomtowns like Abilene, Kansas, and Cheyenne, Wyoming. We meet a diverse cast, from cowboy Teddy Blue to failed rancher and future president Teddy Roosevelt. This is a revolutionary new appraisal of the Old West and the America it made. “Cattle Kingdom is the smartly told account of rampant capitalism making its home—however destructive and decidedly unromantic—on the range. . . . [A] fresh and winning perspective.” —The Dallas Morning News “Knowlton writes well about all the fun stuff: trail drives, rambunctious cow towns, gunfights and range wars . . . [He] enlists all of these tropes in support of an intriguing thesis: that the romance of the Old West arose upon the swelling surface of a giant economic bubble . . . Cattle Kingdom is The Great Plains by way of The Big Short.” —Wall Street Journal “Knowlton deftly balances close-ups and bird’s-eye views. We learn countless details . . . More important, we learn why the story played out as it did.” —The New York Times Book Review “The best one-volume history of the legendary era of the cowboy and cattle empires in thirty years.” —True West “Vastly informative.” —Library Journal “Absorbing.” —Publishers Weekly
