Book Description
The main species of holothurian exploited in the South Pacific are Holothuria scabra, H fuscogilva and H. nobilis, which have high commercial value, Actinopyga echinites, A. miliaris and Thelenota ananas, of medium commercial value, and Holothuria atra, H. fuscopunctata and H mauritiana, whose commercial value is low. Knowledge of the biology of these species is reviewed in detail, as are resource assessment methods. An example of the possible use of remote sensing for estimating potential is given. Harvesting and processing techniques and commodity grading are also discussed, while a chapter focussing on the principal markets for bêche-de-mer, Hong Kong and Singapore concludes that an increase in exports from the countries and territories of the South Pacific is possible if they can supply a consistently good-quality product on a regular basis.

Pacific Island Economies
Author: Hilarian M. A. Codippily
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN: 9780821335543
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 174
Book Description
This sixth annual study focuses on the effects of globalization on developing countries and the growing divide between fast and slow- integrating economies. It describes current trends in integration and answers key questions on trade and on commodity-reliant economies. The book examines two questions in particular detail: Will trade liberalization work? The report argues that countries that embark on trade liberalization in the current environment are likely to be rewarded and recognizes that genuine adjustment costs exist and that complementary reforms are important. How can commodity-reliant countries enhance productivity and diversify exports? Although many of these countries have been among the high growth, fast integrators, many others have been poor performers. Successful exporters are characterized by high productivity in existing commodity sectors, the capacity to diversify to non-traditional commodity exports, and the maintenance of economic stability. The report projects continued rapid acceleration of integration over the next decade, with moderate import growth in the developed countries and continued sharp import increases in developing countries. Those countries that continue to reform their economies and expand their participation in the world economy will be in a position to take advantage of the resulting opportunities; those that do not, risk falling further behind.

Marine Ranching
Author: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 9789251049617
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 226
Book Description
With coastal fisheries in decline around the world, there is growing concern about how long current sources of seafood can supply world needs. There is an increasing emphasis on restocking and aquaculture-based stock enhancement as a way to rapidly replenish depleted fish stocks and increase fishery landings. This publication contains case studies on the use of sea ranching and marine hatchery enhancement to generate income, re-establish fisheries and conserve aquatic biodiversity, including studies from Norway, Australia, the Pacific Islands, the Caspian Sea with an emphasis on Iran, and Japan.
