Book Description
A comprehensive guidebook detailing walks in Germany's Bavarian Alps. Lying along the German-Austrian border in a thin sliver of land roughly 300km long, this area contains some of the most spectacular walking and beautiful scenery that Germany has to offer. 70 graded walks explore mountain landscapes, wild mountain gorges and alpine meadows as well as the region's picturesque villages, opulent baroque churches and fairy-tale castles like Neuschwanstein. There is also the northernmost glacier in the Alps (Blaueis), Germany's largest ice cave (Schellenberg) and its highest mountain, the Zugspitze, all visited on walks described in this guide. The walks are divided into six mountain areas, grouped around base towns to make planning a walking holiday as easy as possible. Bases include Oberstdorf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald, Marquartstein, Inzell, Oberammergau and Ramsau among others. The walks are mainly between 3 and 8 hours in duration, though some longer walks are included staying at mountain huts. The guidebook gives an outline of two multi-day tours and suggestions for shorter valley walks of less than 3hrs are also included. The Bavarian Alps make an ideal destination for an easy-to-organise and affordable walking holiday.

Book Description
The majestic mountains of the Alps, Germany's highest peak--the Zugspitze--and more than 100 lakes glittering in the foothills illustrate this exciting guide to the Bavarian region. The bustling atmosphere of Munich's all-year market, the medieval cities of Rothenburg and Nuremberg, and festivals such as the world-famous Oktoberfest are investigated, proving the region to be one of the most popular holiday destinations in Germany. Ancient traditions are illustrated, showing how the locals still practice them with pride, both in urban centers and rural communities where time seems to have stood still. Showcasing magnificent buildings and historic sites--among them indomitable castles, the idyllic Wieskirche, and mighty Bamberg Cathedral--this travel companion also highlights the area's beautiful gardens, fascinating museums, grand theaters, and famous opera houses such as Wagner's Festspielhaus in Bayreuth. Capturing Bavaria in all its elemental beauty and glorious variety, this handbook also focuses on regional beverage beer, the cheese makers of the Allgäu, and Ludwig II's palatial architectural masterpieces.

Book Description
"The Swan King" is the biography of one of the most enigmatic figures of the 19th century, described by Verlaine as 'the only true king of his century'. A man of wildly eccentric temperament and touched by a rare, imaginative genius, Ludwig II of Bavaria is remembered both for his patronage of Richard Wagner and for the fabulous palaces which he created as part of a dream-world to escape the responsibilities of state. In realization of his fantasies, he created a ferment of creativity among artists and craftsmen, while his neglect of Bavaria's political interests made powerful enemies among those critical of his self-indulgence and excesses. At the age of 40, declared insane in a plot to depose him, Ludwig died in mysterious circumstances.
