Increasing Health Care Provider Awareness to Health Issues Related to Self-contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) Diving
Author: Greg Peistrup
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Scuba diving
Languages : en
Pages : 66
Book Description
Self contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA) diving has grown in popularity exponentially over the past few decades. Divers are now located globally and it is not only possible, but also likely, that a health care provider will encounter a patient with a dive-related need. The primary focus of this project is the education of providers on the many heath concerns regarding SCUBA diving, both from a pre- and post-dive standpoint. In an effort to achieve this goal, practice tools and guidelines were developed that focused on the risks of SCUBA diving. The guidelines target (a) physical examinations prior to SCUBA training, (b) underlying pathologies, and (c) health issues related to diving. Members from the diving and medical communities were approached and asked to evaluate the guidelines on the basis of clarity, ease of use, and usefulness. Space was given for free-form comments and suggestions. Responses were tallied to evaluate overall acceptance and perceived efficacy of the tools. All participants from both the dive and medical communities were receptive to a required visit to the provider prior to initial dive training as well as completing a more extensive questionnaire. Respondents, however, thought decisions regarding testing should be left up to the provider. Lastly, the quick reference tools were well received. Professional dive agencies should evaluate their certification criteria to include a new diver questionnaire and a required pre-participation examination. Additionally, they should review these suggested guidelines for publication and distribution. As providers become more aware of the potential risks of SCUBA diving, as well as the techniques for minimizing these risks, the safety of recreational SCUBA divers will be greatly enhanced.
