Desde el año 2011, la ONU promueve la década de la seguridad vial, iniciativa que surge al reconocer que los accidentes de tránsito son un problema de salud pública mundial: a causa de estos, hay más de 1,3 millones de muertos y cerca de 30 millones de heridos anualmente en el planeta. La década de la seguridad vial busca consolidar políticas integrales que reduzcan de manera significativa los accidentes, especialmente en países en desarrollo, donde se concentra esta problemática. La Universidad de los Andes ha venido trabajando en diversas investigaciones con el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID) y el Fondo de Prevención Vial (FPV), en temas relacionados con la accidentalidad vial y su prevención, en especial a nivel urbano.
