Book Description
Over 80 percent of the freshwater used in the Maghreb region is used by the agriculture sector. The region deals with rising soil and water salinization as well as agricultural land degradation. The sector is being impacted by climate change, particularly in light of the recent extended droughts. Making the most of all available water resources, especially saline waters, becomes essential in a situation where water scarcity is getting worse due to a combination of climate change's effects and rising demand. FAO conducted this study on the state and prospects of biosaline agriculture in the member nations of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) in collaboration with the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) and the AMU, as part of a regional initiative on water scarcity. Biosaline agriculture is the cultivation of plants in water or on soils high in salt. It entails using tolerant plants that can produce a significant amount of biomass under saline circumstances to recover and maintain saline soils and to exploit saline waters for sustainable and financially advantageous production. The report provides a comparative analysis of the five nations in the Maghreb region, assesses the diverse farming practices and experiences already in use there, and offers a vision and framework for coordinated action and the promotion of biosaline farming. The report highlights the regions of the Maghreb countries that are most affected by salt, along with their features, existing practices, methods of adaptation, and prospects for future sustainable agricultural production.

FAO Investment Centre – Annual review 2020
Author: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 9251345317
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 81
Book Description
The FAO Investment Centre provides a wide range of support services to help countries make more and better investments in food and agriculture. This review looks back at the work the Centre carried out with its partners in 2020. Despite a challenging year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centre’s global team supported investment-related policy and sector studies to increase policy dialogue and contributed to the design, technical assistance, supervision or evaluation of investment projects in 120 countries. The Centre increasingly linked both its policy work with investment support to scale up impact. And it promoted greater knowledge sharing and innovation, while also helping to strengthen the capacity of people and institutions to make better investment decisions. The Centre continues to remain relevant by adapting its skills and expertise to keep pace with a constantly evolving investment landscape and fast-changing world and by advocating for more sustainable agri-food systems.

Strategic Water
Author: Frederick Lorenz
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN: 9781975721589
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 322
Book Description
After the final phase of drawdown of U.S. troops in Iraq, it is important to do what we can to help maintain a level of stability and to look ahead to emerging security threats. Strategic Water: Iraq and Security Planning in the Euphrates-Tigris Basin by Frederick Lorenz and Edward J. Erickson makes an important contribution to this effort by taking a close look at a serious problem that is often neglected-the decline in freshwater availability and its impact on regional security. With convincing authority, the authors make it clear that the situation in Iraq is deteriorating much faster than expected, and in a few years much of Iraq's water supply will be undrinkable, largely due to high salinity levels. This book not only predicts a crisis, it provides some details on what that crisis might look like: an ugly mix of human suffering, governmental instability, population movement, and a rise in extremist violence. Despite the fact that the United States may have less influence in Iraq in the short term, we cannot deny that it remains a vital U.S. interest to keep the region secure. And there are things that can be done in the short term to help avoid the worst-case scenario.

Toward a Sustainable Energy Future
Author: International Energy Agency
Publisher: OECD
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 266
Book Description
The manner in which we produce & consume energy is of crucial importance to sustainable development, as energy has deep relationships with each of its three dimensions -- the economy, the environment & social welfare. These relationships develop in a fast-moving & complex situation characterized by increasing globalisation, growing market liberalisation & new technologies, as well as by growing concerns about climate change & energy-supply security. In order to make energy an integral part of sustainable development, new policies need to be developed. Such policies must strike a balance among the three dimensions of sustainable development. They must reduce our exposure to large-scale risk. The IEA has synthesized a number of experiences with policies aimed to promote sustainable development. These experiences are reported in seven subject chapters on energy supply security, market reform, improving energy efficiency, renewable energies, sustainable transport, flexibility mechanisms for greenhouse gas reductions & on non-Member countries.
