Book Description
This is the third volume of the comprehensive series on Struc ture and Function of the Circulation, edited by Dr. Colin J. Schwartz with the collaboration of Nicholas T. Werthessen and Stewart Wolf. Dr. Schwartz, an authority on vascular structure and function and a respected investigator in this field for many years, selected as authors for the chapters an outstanding group of scientists from various parts of the world. As indicated in the Preface, the impetus for this broad treat ise evolved from the scientific sessions of three interdisciplinary international conferences held in Lindau in 1970, in Heidelberg in 1973, and Totts Gap, Pennsylvania, in 1976 as well as from numerous informal discussions. The subjects dealt with in these three volumes range from the roots of our knowledge in ancient history to the most recent inform ation on contractile proteins of smooth muscle cells. The structure, distribution, and dynamics of arteries, veins, and lymphatics are described in chapters on the systemic circulation as well as that of the heart, the vessels themselves, the brain, nerves, and viscera. Descriptions of ultrastructure, histochemistry, metabolism, and func tion of endothelium and of vascular smooth muscle and of vascular changes in aging are all included in the vast scope of this under taking.

Book Description
There is “never a dull moment” in this “excellent account” of an overlooked Confederate triumph during the Civil War’s Battle of Gettysburg (San Francisco Book Review). While many Civil War buffs celebrate Picket’s Charge as the climactic moment of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Confederate Army’s true high point had come the afternoon before. When Longstreet’s corps triumphantly entered the battle, the Federals just barely held on. The foremost Rebel spearhead on that second day of the battle was Brig. Gen. William Barksdale’s Mississippi brigade, which launched what one Union observer called the “grandest charge that was ever seen by mortal man.” On the second day of Gettysburg, the Federal left was not as vulnerable as Lee had envisioned, but had cooperated with Rebel wishes by extending its Third Corps into a salient. When Longstreet finally gave Barksdale the go-ahead, the Mississippians utterly crushed the peach orchard salient and continued marauding up to Cemetery Ridge. Hancock, Meade, and other Union generals had to gather men from four different corps to try to stem the onslaught. Barksdale himself was killed at the apex of his advance. Darkness, as well as Confederate exhaustion, finally ended the day’s fight as the shaken, depleted Federal units took stock. They had barely held on against the full ferocity of the Rebels on a day that would decide the fate of the nation.

The management of injured and acutely unwell patients remains a cornerstone of surgical practice. Although techniques for assessment, investigation and operative management of the emergency surgical patient may be drawn from elective practice; they also require expediency of decision making and constant consideration of both anatomical and physiological pathology. Hamilton Bailey’s Emergency Surgery 14e is the famous textbook of emergency surgery that defines these key principles. Reflecting huge changes in the practice of emergency and general surgery over recent years, this new edition of Hamilton Bailey's Emergency Surgery is designed to meet the needs of basic and higher surgical trainees. The thorough and diverse coverage of emergency surgical principles including important anaesthetic and physiological considerations and the use of damage control techniques alongside core topics in emergency surgery such as shock and response to injury, surgical infections, principles of wound management and nutrition ensure that the clinician has evidence-based medicine to rely on. The extensive range of trauma surgery chapters cover all the surgical subspecialties as they relate to emergency surgery providing comprehensive coverage of acute care surgery. The new edition of this highly regarded textbook on emergency surgery provides the necessary knowledge and evidence base to help the on-call surgical trainee through the important decision-making process when treating acute surgical patients.
